Round 108:

The cactus hops with tremendous speed to 60N110E.

Gerion fires an arrow that looks on target, but the cactus dodges it! (Rolled 24!)

Round 109:

The cactus hops to 80N105E.

Gerion briefly mulls the situation. The catus thing is slow moving, but if he doesn't land a hit soon then the draw will keep him from defeating more foes for his side. He arrives at a decision, notches another arrow and lets fly.

The cactus dodges again, as if it can anticipate the arrow's flight pattern. (Rolled 20)

Round 110:

The cactus hops to 80N45E and shoots its red flower at Gerion. It hits (rolled 14 touch) and explodes into a ball of flame! Gerion fails to dodge (rolled 8 Ref save) and takes 11 points of damage. He has 15 hp left.

That's it Gerion thinks. He drops the bow and charges the cactus, drawing his longsword as he does.

(if the Cactus is size Large, that would make final position 80N55E)

(Free: drop longbow, Free: draw sword as moving, Full: Charge cactus)

OOC: Drawing a sword is free when combined with a regular move action, not a full round action such as a charge. I'll assume Gerion moves and attacks, as he only has to move 30 feet.

Gerion moves to 80N35E and tries to slice the plant with his longsword. The cactus dodges the blow! (Rolled 20)

Round 111: The medium-sized cactus takes a 5 foot step back to 80N50E.

Growing more frustrated, Gerion rears up and lunges forward with hooves and sword.

(i.e. 5" step to follow the cactus and then Full Attack)

The dwarf holds the unfinished mug o' ale near his lips, his eyes widening. He comments to no one in particular, "By the Holy Beer Stein o' Moradin! I ain't never seen a cactus monk before!"

Gerion misses three times. (Highest roll 24)

Round 112:

The plant fights back! It tries to slam Gerion twice and hits once for 12 points of damage! Gerion has 3 hp left.

Gerion staggers back confused. That last swing of the sword should have lopped half of the cactus' arm from it's trunk, yet somehow it just bent out of the way. Could the entire beast be an illusion of some kind?

Gerion pulls back, using his greater speed to get clear of the thing and gain a moment to think.

(Full: Withdraw action, back up to 80N20E then up to 10N10E, also hope to gain a disbelief save against any possible illusion now that he's interacted with it - quite painfully)

(Interpretation question - is Gerion truely missing entirely, or bouncing off of hard exterior? If missing entirely, this is fuelling the disbelief.)

(Man, I'm going to have to look up the stats for this thing once the fight is over. I'm as confused as Gerion, which makes me glad I *haven't* looked at the stats, 'cause it's more fun.)

OOC: Typically, when an attack roll is close enough to hit that the only difference is the target's dodge bonus, then I say that the target dodges out of the way. I don't remember exactly what the rolls for Gerion's hooves were, but they were much lower, so we'll say that those attacks bounced off a tough exterior.

Despite Gerion's hopes, the cactus seems all too real.

Round 113:

With blazing speed, the cactus charges to 20N20E, leaping the last 20 feet and pouncing at Gerion like a cat! It hits with a normal slam for 8, then slams Gerion with its entire body for another 13 points of damage!

Gerion doesn't have to have nightmares about this thing anymore, but the rest of NG does.

Next up for NG: a cervidal (celestial). (MM II) It goes next in round 113.
