night watch

If your group is camping out and you have a watch. Say there's 6 people in the party 2 on watch 4 sleeping. Something attacks, the 2 on watch start yelling would this automatically wake the rest of the party which is sleeping within 10' to 15' of the 2 yelling? if not what should the DC be? I know if i was sleeping and 2 people started yelling at the top of there lungs 15' away from me chances are I would wake up within about 1/2 a second. Thanks

To hear someone who's yelling next to you: DC 0 if you're not deaf. -10 IIRC for sleeping... there you go with a DC 10.

That being said, this is a place where fun and logic should come into play. I find it just annoying to presume that screaming ten feet away from you, when you know that danger might spring at any time, isn't going to automatically wake you up. If there aren't any other factors (alcohol, etc.) I would let shouting wake up the other characters automatically.

As for the title? I can't help myself --

I agree with piratecat. Otherwise it's like saying a person with say a little above average wisdom, +1 listen, is sleeping when his friend comes in and starts screaming at the top of his lungs for 6 seconds. So with the DC being 10 and him getting + 1 to listen ,DC 9, the person has only a 55% chance of waking up and a 45% chance staying asleep. Coma patients wake up easier.

The DC 0 is for people talking. That does not seem equivalent to screams for them to wake up. The DC for a battle is -10. That would be too low for screams. So I would set the DC at around -5. Add the +1 for being 10 feet away for a final DC of -4. The sleeper gets a -10 to his check, so he needs a 6 or higher on the d20 assuming no other modifiers.

Looks like we have some very sound sleepers out there. I hope I can find people like this if I ever take up a life of crime. I could blow off the doors to the house with explosives and there would be a 30% chance of them not waking up. speaking for myself I wake up if the wind blows to hard, and i'm not worried about being attacked by a group of ogers or trolls at any second.

I set the base DC at -10, so as long as you're within 10' of the battle you end up needing a DC 0 Listen check to wake- easy as long as you don't have any penalties.

Add 1 to the DC per 10' of distance and things might start to change- if the watch is foolish enough to stray far from camp and get into trouble, well, they might not be able to wake up other party members.

A game I played in had one pc we nicknamed "Sleepy McUseless" because he kept sleeping through 1-3 rounds of battle at night! (Even using a fairly generous set of Listen DCs...)

Finally- not to stray too far into HR territory- here's a custom feat to address this:

LIGHT SLEEPER (General)
You don’t need much sleep and are much more flexible about your sleep cycle than most people.
Prerequisites: Con 11+, Wis 11+, Endurance
Benefit: You only need ¾ the normal amount of sleep for your race. You can also spread your sleep out into blocks throughout the day rather than needing uninterrupted rest. You can sleep despite noise or physical discomfort but even while asleep your subconscious remains alert for danger, making any listen checks normally (with no circumstance penalty for being asleep).
Special: Elves cannot take this feat as they do not sleep.

I don't really see people as not waking up when they screw their Listen check. It's as well a check how fast they regain their senses and are ready to get up ;)

Short: The check and how fast they succeed for me is a measure for how fast they wake up and get ready.

IRL, one summer night, I was asleep with the bedroom window open. My bedroom is directly over the entryway into the central courtyard of the apartment, right over the gate and call box. At 2 or 3 in the morning, a drunk came up to the gate, and when his gf or wife would not let him in, started yelling at the top of his lungs and pounding on the gate, in what seemed to be an attempt to break it down. This lasted about ten minutes, about 10 feet from my bed.

Or at least, that is what I was told the next day. I did not hear any of it, I slept through the whole thing. On the other hand, I regularly wake up the instant my son starts to open the bedroom door, even if the heater is running, fan and all.

People can sleep though amazing amounts of disturbance.

FWIW I have personally sat in a fighting hole during an artillery barrage while listening to the Marine next to me snore the entire time.
