Ninjas: in or out?

Sure, why not have ninjas. I happen the classes out there for them. As does my group.

I personally enjoy playing ninja, but they certainly don't fit in your standard FR campaign. I plan on picking up Rokugan soon though, and if we start that sort of campaign I would really enjoy playing a ninja.

Do you mean ninja as in black pyjama-wearing assassin? Definietly out, because that's not what ninja's ever were. The reason people think they wore black pyjamas is because that's what the back stage crwe of Noh theatres wore, so people would know to ignore them when watching a play, and so when the actors wanted to portray the mythical stealth of the assassin they dressed 'em up in the same kit to make people understand that they should be ignored, as if no-one could see them.

And even that stealth was greatly over-emphasised, really.

If you mean ninja's as in mercenary saboteurs etc, then definitely in., because that is what they were.

If I want spy-assassin types in a western campaign, I'll make spysassins. Easy enough. But ninja-PRC type ninjas in a western campaign.. uh no. Heck I don't even like -Monks- in a western campaign that much.

For me its just appearance. Ninjas are welcome in my campaign (cause they flip out and kill everyone!) but they cant look like ninjas. They have to dress in a western style and do not get pajamas. (If I knew the real japanese name for the outfits they wore I would use that, but I don't, so its "pajamas")

Monks I am the same way. They are western monks when it comes to what they look like. Monks outfit = robes. They might be able to get away with Tibetin when they get near or past thay, but none of the kung fu stuff. Monks IMC are simply guys that understand force and the human body better than everyone else.
