Nintendo Revolution Controller

Very...interesting. I think this one's going to take actual use to see if its any good.
Those were immediately my sentiments upon viewing it. I don't know what to think about it until I actually see it in action with a variety of games/game types.

(I can see some issues already though, based on 'hands-on' reports [see IGN]. Holding one's arm out [and possibly flailing around with it] for a length of time doesn't sound all that great to me. As well, 3rd party support may be questionable.)

In any case, that controller in no way, shape, or form makes me want the new Nintendo system. I might get it if it's cheap and has (lots of) compelling games. (Recent history has shown that only 1 of those 2 is likely to happen...)

Hmm... I think the weird controller is another item arguing in favor of not buying a Revolution, but I was pretty strongly leaning that way anyway.

love reading the various opinions around the net on this thing.
From "I can't wait to try it" to "I'm going nowhere near it"

Iwonder about "shoulder-weariness" from holding the thing out and moving it around. But I suppose it would have to let you re-center eveytime you play, so for most games there's probably an unextended-arm position that is comfortable.

My other concern is playing from the side. My living room is small, and one of the people playing usually winds up playing from way off to the side. I fear this thing will need a "straight-on" approach.

Another interesting interview, with this gem:

Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?

Jim Merrick: We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.

So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too.

Looking at the attachment at the bottom of the stick and reading this interview, it doesnt look like it will let you plug in your pre-existing controllers from past generations, but instead force you to buy a new one! YAY! Of course, controllers are the best money-maker for every console, so this shouldnt really be a surprise.

(do the ps3 and 360 let you use the ps2 and xbox controllers if you want? I'm not sure.)

I was certainly surprised by the appearance of the controller. I'll have to try it out before I can determine if it's any good, but it certainly looks interesting. It also going to be exciting to see how different games are going to take advantage of the controller. I'm catiously optimistic. However, I think it's extremely couragous of Nintendo to make these bold and innovative moves.

I suppose it could be designed so that each cheek could have control over a different aspect of playing, eh?
Yeah, and your friends would be shouting at you, not "Press the Button! Press the Button!" but "Clench! Clench! Clench your cheeks!" ;)

Wow, that is so cool. They didn't misuse the word "Revolution".

Nintendo knows what it's doing. It can't really compete with Sony in Japan or Sony/Microsoft in the US, so it goes with the ingenuity. Fabulous. If nothing, it'll be good arm exercise while you play. :)

Yeah, with a one-handed controller they can exploit them new Virtual One-Night Stand software. Rated M for Mature.
