Non-Combat Events on the road

The party finds some bread crumbs leading into the forest where... way off in the distance, they can see smoke rising - probably from a chimney.

A bloodied red cloak lies on the path, the blood seems only a few hours old (still sticky) and possibly not yet from a mortal wound. The ranger determines that some sort of large animal has dragged a small humanoid away into the woods.

Then there's always the ruined wooden house, with two sets of tracks moving away at a fast pace... inside the party finds a painting of an oddly well to do half-orc family.

Somewhere down the road, in the middle of nowhere, a traveling caravan of performers and merchants has stopped. Everyone on the caravan appears to be roguish - everything from gypsies to fortune tellers and crooked bards to con artists. There seems to be a lot of commotion about, and soon, the PCs learn why the caravan have paused their trek. A thief down on his luck decided to steal some small but very valuable items from one of the wagons. He was caught, and now he faces the punishment assigned to him by the people of the caravan: slow torture until death. The thief pleads to the PCs that he is innocent and will reward them if they can prove it to the caravan. After a while, the PCs discover more of the caravan's dark and bizarre behavior, such as hiring mercenaries to make 'certain fortune tellings to come true' and viciously branding people who know of the caravan's schemes. The PCs have to decide whether they believe the thief or the thieves, or if they don't believe anyone altogether and take their own course of action.

Cheers!

The shadow of a large flying creature passes overhead - far enough to be out of range, but near enough to scare the players with the very size of the beast.

Thankfully, its not hungry.

Half a day's travel later, they come across the burnt wreckage of a town. There are no survivors.

That must be why the thing wasn't hungry...

They hear the sound of a child crying a lot...coming from various directions.

If they wander off to a small path, they find a corpse of a little girl. Her spirit appears and tells them "Find my dolly!"

Not to much further, inside a badger warren, they find a doll and also 10 gp.

"Tragedians, sir, at your command! Deaths and disclosures, universal and particular, denouements both unexpected and inexorable, transvestite melodrama on all levels (including the suggestive). We transport you into the world of intrigue and illusion... clowns, if you like, murderers; we can do you ghosts and battles (on the skirmish levels), heroes, villains, tormented lovers; set pieces in the poetic vein; we can do you rapiers or rape or both, by all means; faithless wives and ravished virgins - flagrante delicto at a price, but that comes under 'realism', for which there are special terms. Getting warm, am I?"

I had alist of random wierdness that could happen to the party on the road. Everything from finding an old abandon grave (not a graveyard just a single grave out in the middle of nowhere), to a player steps into a gopher hole and trips, to seeing strange shapes in the clouds (a Will save vs DC X to see certain things - dragon, giant, sword whatever).

Gotta find that .doc!
