Non-Jedi and lightsabers

In the old d6 Star Wars game, you always ran a risk of injuring yourself with a lightsaber. The concept of a weightless blade makes it dangerous to the wielder without training.

Couldn't someone add to the pommel a gravitic induction system to stimulate the weight of a blade to avoid this?

Because of that, I probably wouldn't let someone teach themself how to use a 'saber, but if they had a background reason for training they could pick up the feat.

IMHO if you find a teacher you could learn Exotic Weapon Proficiency.
And without that feat you'd hurt yourself if you'd miss the enemy AC by more than 5 (and on natural 1)

I actually featured a non-force sensitive Lightsaber Master in one of my campaigns- he was a Darth Vader "decoy". I decided that, since Lord Vader is such an obvious target for a rebel assassination squad (good luck to them, they'll need it), Vader had a small cadre (four, actually) of "fake Vaders", elite non-force using stormtroopers trained in advanced lightsaber combat techniques. As far as anyone else knew (other than vader and the emperor himself), these fake "vaders", unswervingly loyal to Lord Vader, were the real deal- and Vader used them to command troops and fleets in special engagements all over the galaxy. The one that the party confronted was a 12th level human Soldier with almost all his feats devoted to making him the ultimate lightsaber melee combatant.... let's just say they were utterly shocked when they found out that they had just defeated a fake dark lord of the sith...

I seem to remember reading somewhere that lightsabers were weapons of the nobility before the Jedi started using them.

Here's a quote from the SW novel (when Ben gives Luke his father's lightsabre):

"Your father's lightsaber," Kenobi told him. "At one time they were widely used. Still are, in certain galactic quarters."

Thanks for the help guys. I can now make my bounty hunter without feeling like I betrayed the spirit of star wars. So I have a new question are there any other light-weapons aside from lightsabers and light daggers.

Feh. Claiming that a weightless blade is more likely to hurt the weilder is just, well, stupid. Nobody with any kinestetic sense what-so-ever is going to loose track of where the infinitely sharp blade is, and the fact that the handle weighs about the same as a dagger should make it easier to use, not harder. The reason non-jedi don't use them is simple: Non-Jedi can't parry blaster-bolts with 'em, which turns most combats into "Draw lightsaber, get gunned down at 30 paces. Die."
If players want to waste a feat taking the EWP, then they can go right ahead.

Well a non force user may be able to use a lightsaber, but he better have a very good reason for having one since lightsabers require the use of the force in it's construction (from I, Jedi and various other novels.)
