Not really sure where to put this, but here seemed best. Miniatures related.

So I've never really cared about miniatures but I really want to get some to cover basics. Let's face it, penny goblins and quarter orcs really only can go so far, especially when there are so many resources out there now. What's the best way to acquire miniatures to represent a good number of player race and class combos? Like Human Fighter, Dwarven Cleric, Elven Wizard, that sort of stuff.

If I were starting over, I'd go with Pathfinder Pawns or just buy singles off the internet.

Reaper Bones are not bad if you don't need them painted.

You've got a few options:
  • Buy somebody else's collection. DDM Lots appear semi-frequently on eBay; I actually have about 900 minis I've preparing to sell as a lot, but I haven't got around to finishing inventorying them yet.
  • Buy LEGO. With Lord of the Rings stuff (along with a number of other themes) there are lots of options for fantasy characters of every type and genre, and of course it's totally modular. The cons to this approach are that LEGO can get pretty expensive too; that LEGO minifigures are way oversized compared to the average D&D battlemap (I recommend 2" squares = 5' feet); and that I've yet to find any good LEGO heads for drow characters.
    • Hasbro has a dedicated line of D&D sets and figures in its LEGO-compatible Kre-O product line. As a LEGO purist, I cannot in good conscience condone sullying any LEGO collection with any imitations, but YMMV.
  • Tokens. You can make 'em fast and cheap at home, or you can buy them. Either way, a thousand token won't break your bank nor will it take up a huge space in your gaming collection.

If I were to go with the pathfinder pawns which set would you recommend for the type of thing I'm looking for. I have all the pathfinder books so I can sort of guess what pawns will be in them. I'm thinking NPC Codex maybe?
