nother 'epic' question

wallshot

First Post
so if my DM was kind enuf to let me play a race with an ECL of +2 (not drow), and my character is a 19th lvl class (doesn't matter what), does that make me epic? my total character level is 21, but I'm only 19 class level...

any interpretations based on the available rules?

the reason i ask is b/c if the character were, say, a fighter, he would be eligable for a feat at 20th fighter level, which would actually be 22 character level. Would he then be eligable for an epic fighter feat?

Salutations,

Well, you can still go up to 20th lvl with the ecl-race.

I know I have seen charts that give you the xp needed for further levels, but I would be darned if I could remember where... argh...

FD

Edit: Oriental Adventures has one such chart, but I have seen it elsewhere.

So, you can go up to 20th lvl with any race- then after that.. you can go epic.

still.. FD

While I can't prove it via a page reference, I would say yes, you could take Epic Feat at that point. Why, you may ask?

Look at this month's Fight Club. At one point the Half-Fiend Gargoyle Barbarian is 18th level, yet defintely has a few Epic Feats. That won't be enough for some people but there you are.

Not all epic feats may require epic levels, (I'll find out in a few days:D ). But as far as feats go, there is a difference between your CR and your level. Feats, skills and the like are base on either the base creature or their class level, wichever is more benefical, not the two combined. So if you have a first level fighter of a +2 CR race, you are a third level encounter, and would only be ballanced in a third level group. However, you are still only first level, and gain only two feats, 1 for being a character, 1 for being a fighter. The special abilities of the race make up for rest.

On page 46 of the ELH

Caharcters gain epic feats in the following ways:
At 21rst level and every three levels thereafter...
Each character class gains bonus feats according to the class description. these feats must be selected from the list of bonus feats for that class.

So that looks like a no to me on epic feats before level 20 on a positive ecl character.

Gerti Orelsdotter is in the book as a frost giant cleric 5 rune caster 4 but she has no epic feats

that then brings up another question then, is a monsters HD equal to their level or is it based on thier CR.
Im assuming that the bonus feats U get every 3 levels once U are at 21+, U can choose from epic feats. U can only access the class bonus epic feats when the class itself is about 20. does that make sense?

I believe I understand you, and I think you are right.

A 10/10 Multiclass character could pick epic feats for there feat every 3 level. They would not be getting class bonus feats, however, because they would still be progressing through the classes first 20 levels, as outlined within the PHB.

At least, I think thats what you asked. Forgive me for misunderstanding. :D

no misunderstanding caliber, U got exactly what i was getting at.

now, can we just apply this to the original question about ECL characters?

Well, like I said earlier, I would say a creature that passed level 20 with the addition of ECL could pick up Epic Feats whenever they qualify for one. They would still progress through classes regularly. I can't back it up with a book page, but again, its what happened in this month's Fight Club. 'Nuff for me.
