I chose "on the fence" but it really didn't fit - I'd rather have a choice that said "adding it to my repertoire". I'm only committing to the PHB at this point - I might not buy the rest, it all depends on if I like iT, if I have a group that wants to play it, etc.

For the moment, we're sticking with 4e. When 5e is released, I'll re-evaluate.

Things that might sway me:
  • If it supports OGL or something close, that's a plus
  • If there are good electronic tools for it, that would help a lot
  • If there is an economical subscription model for electronic (searchable) book content
  • Other positive surprises

Things that bias me against it:
  • Disinclination to buy a bunch more crappy WoTC books
  • Less tactical crunch than 4e (from what I know so far)
  • Less balance than 4e (from what I know so far)

I'm sure 4e is not viable indefinitely (unless you are willing to just use existing books), but there is no hurry yet, and I'm not sure we'll replace it with 5e.

Good to hear somebody mention why they are playing 4e. I think the best part is how easy it is to create balanced encounters.

In the current campaign I am playing in, my wizard did 4x36+4x10 = 184 damage against four targets using a encounter power, while the warlock did 1x50 damage. About 2-4x the damage output from my Wizard. And my character is just in the well-made, not optimized territory. What I am saying is that the "balance" in 4e can often be very similar to earlier editions. The biggest difference is how often your character is useless. It's much better in 4e. ;)

I haven't actually played 5e, but it really reminds me of 3e, although the spell casters are nerfed quite a lot, but in a different way than in 4e. They have got more versatility/nova power, but less staying power. I really liked spellcasters to have versatility as a trade in for survivability.

What I am saying is that in 5e, they have thought more about balance than in 3e, and is not that far off 4e (maybe?).

Picked the first option, but actually it's "Played 5E playtest, decided to wait for final version rather than continue, will start over with books."

If the test game with the Starter Set goes well, might turn into a campaign, but we'll see.

I guess I'll stick with 4e for another year (to give it 3 full years of real world gameplay) than switch to 5e - and so convert all the 3.x campaigns we stopped to run 4e without difficult comparisons.

Huh. Turns out I've had a change of plans.

Since "Basic D&D" is going to be available for free on the WotC, I'll skip the Starter Set and go straight to that. And if I like that, I'll pick up the "big three".

(If I do buy in, I'll probably also pick up the Starter Set, for the adventure, and also the two Tyranny of Dragons adventures. Because I can always use adventures. :) )

Looks like the free Basic D&D PDF will probably get used when the D&D slot pops up in our game rotation. Our group were enjoying playing H2, so I might see if I can convert that on the fly.

I hope I will end "kingmaker" in time for 5th edition "hoard of the dragon queen".
I have 15 sundays to play with my group until 5th edition, about 120 hours left. XD

I don't currently have a gaming group, and I'm hoping that the 5E release will make it easier to find players for a new one. :D

Lately, I've been working on a setting, partly planning a possible future campaign but largely because I enjoy worldbuilding in its own right. I could see using 3.5, Pathfinder, or 5E rules for it -- playing in a few sessions of "Murder in Baldur's Gate" using playtest rules last fall left me cautiously optimistic regarding 5E.
