Now You Can Play With Vin Diesel's WITCH HUNTER Class!

The class played by Vin Diesel in his recent D&D game was a custom class called the Witch Hunter, designed for him by DM Matt Mercer. Geek & Sundry has released the class as a nine-page PDF! "In a landscape tormented by all manner of beasts, devils, and abominations from beyond the veil, most live in fear of the dark, of superstition, and of the unknown. Some grow hardened by this experience, instead choosing to stand up and fight against the tide of shadow. These folk are called 'heroes'. Some, however, are so fanatical and bent on destroying the anethema that plagues the countryside that they embrace dark, forbidden knowledge. They so obsessively research forgotten magics and dangerous, experimental alchemy to become the perfect hunter that their humanity is often called into question. These folk are called 'Witch Hunters'."

Impressive. I think this is an interesting archetype. Order of the mutant looks a lot like the Witcher (from the books and computer game)!
 

I will be joining a Ravenloft game soon and the DM approved this class so I plan on creating a dwarvish Ghostslayer. Ghostslayer is the most mechanically simple of the 3 available archetypes but it still could be fun and, starting at 5th level (with 2 attacks adding Blood Rite damage + STR + WIS modifiers), very effective in the setting.
 

I don't know how it works in actual play, but conceptually it looks very well designed aesthetically. Impressive.

Now I want to see a whole bunch more base classes.

I think one of the best aspects of the sub-class mechanic is how easy it is to make them and fit them into the game.

I think the Witch Hunter should just be a Ranger sub-class. Maybe a Warlock sub-class too if you want to split it up.
 

Actually, this might be a pretty good chassis for a revised Ranger class. It feels "about right" for a Ranger who has a strong anti-undead favored enemy bias in any case if you added a few more nature features.

Matt Mercer, the DM from the D&Diesel game who created the Witch Hunter class, stated on his Twitter feed and on the Geek & Sundry website that he took inspiration from The Witcher when creating it. :)

Thematically it should be mentioned that while the class calls itself a witch hunter, its more a hunter who happens to be a witch, then a hunter of witches which is what I assumed when I saw the name, which is a good thing, because the name of the pathfinder class inquistors why I won't play it except for archetypes that don't use the title. As a neopagan I concider inquistors aka to playing a Nazi or a Grand Wizard from the KKK. I'm very forgiving, but even a open minded person like me has a limit when it comes to comfort zone. I don't judge those who don't mind playing the inquistor as is, its just not for me.
 

My face-to-face 5e group is currently in the Ravenloft setting and I was thinking this class might be perfect for that.

What do you all think about the class overall and which version of the class do you think is best?

I'm with you for very similar reasons. It's also why when at Gencon, I couldn't stomach the Paradigm Concepts rpg named Witch Hunter (The Invisible World).
I know they were going for this "You're in the 17th Century hunting down monsters, etc", but the name is just insensitive.
Case and point: I'm pretty sure there would be outrage if they called it Christian Hunter or Jew Hunter.
 

Don't over think it.

I was a little confused at that blood rite description... (wound yourself is a little trite) I assume you do a weapon attack against yourself (without critting?, automatic success?) with the required weapon and then roll the damage die?

LoL, though attacking yourself would be funny, no.
You simply either harm yourself with that weapon, or harm yourself and let your blood drip on the weapon. Whatever seems appropriate to you and the GM. Just so long as you get hurt in the right way, and your blood is on the weapon. (I say the right way, because it's a magical ritual of the classic sense, not the game mechanics type.)
ALL the damage done by that action is represented by the reduction of your maximum hit points. (Or just plain hit point loss at level 20.)
