NWN as a single player

Is it going to really suck to play this game one player? If you're only allowed one character, and only one of each "type" of NPC (types including things like familiar, hireling, summoned monster, etc.) how can you possibly get a balanced party and not be whacked by the opposition?

The thing is, I am really not interested in multiplayer since I only have a dialup connection. I just want a good CRPG. But I can't imagine what class I'm going to take if I'm going to be the ONLY PC with maybe one continual NPC. I could do a Bard, but then I'm never going to see a lot of the cooler magic.

I'm also bummed out that it's point buy and not rolling, but I can live with that. Especially since 3E isn't cruel to non-mega stats.

I'm just hoping for a good successor to Baldur's Gate, and fearing that the focus on multiplayer will mean I won't be able to enjoy the game that way.

I haven't heard the details on this but I would assume you will either meet NPCs like in BG, or can design a group like in Icewind Dale.

As far as multiplayer goes, dialup should be fine as long as you are just running the client and playing on someone else's server. The other option is a LAN party at home/school/work if you've got the hub.

The only official things I've seen on this (and they may be out of date) were:

1) It would be easier for single players to get hirelings and

2) You can only have one companion of each "type". Types included (if I remember correctly): familiars/animal companions, summoned monsters and hirelings.

I guess so. I'm not as interested in that, though.

From what I have heard the module is 40 to 50 hours play time for a single player.

Now as far as portals go, no, you should be able to play other peoples games if they provide them for downloading, you can then adjust them for yourself.

They must have extended the time! :)

Yep, when things got pushed back due to the Interplay fiasco, they added to the included campaign (I don't call it the single player campaign, because any module, including the out-of-the box one, can be either.)

Single player is AWESOME (so far).

The graphics are far, far better than I was led to believe they would be.

On the other hand, I'd forgotten how *pathetic* a low level wizard actually is without a party to back him up. Time to hire me some Henchmen.

Later all.

I am enjoying the sinlge player game already. Of course, I chose to be a Monk so it is a bit tough. Henchmen are a must for the non hard core fighting classes.

My first impression is the only thing that makes this better than Morrowind is that it used the 3rd edition rules and does a pretty good job. Light years better than Pool of Radiance, The ruin (hehe). Morrowind actually is unbelievable as a sigle player game and huge. I don't know how I will get through both and run a business!!!

I am not at all dissapointed with NWN but I am also not blown away either. I think multi-player with a DM will change all that for me. I will tinker with the tool set some more too. The beta was good but lacked a great deal so it was only a teaser.
