well, from that i definitely got the idea that this should be a mind-affecting compulsion effect. obviously, we only want to use this to erase memories, so the obliviax wouldn't have the other abilities associated with the spell. i think the power is well-stated enough as written in the last update that we shouldn't have to refer back to the modify memory spell. here it is again for sake of ease:

Steal Memories (Su): An obliviax can steal the memories of any intelligent creature within 60 feet as a standard action. The affected creature must succeed on a DC 14 Will save or lose all recollection of the events of the last 24 hours. If the target is a spellcaster that prepares spells, all prepared spells are lost until the target rests to prepare them again. If the target is a spellcaster that does not need to prepare spells, the target loses all unused spell slots until he rests again. An affected creature takes 1d3 points of Wisdom damage, becoming baffled and disoriented, with all memories of the previous 24 hours blanked out. Surrounding the moss with lead will block its powers totally. This is a mind-affecting compulsion effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Ah, OK. That'll work, though we might want to note that "This cannot negate charm, geas/quest, suggestion, or similar spells.", or just state that it "otherwise functions as the modifiy memory spell".

Memory moss can sense the approach of sentient beings; once they are within 60 feet, the moss can attempt to steal their memories. It is selective, first attempting to steal wizards' memories, then priests', then any other spellcasters', then any other characters'.

Does detect thoughts allow for this? I know it can "guess" wizards by learning the intelligence, but that doesn't help with sorcerers, clerics, etc. Should we add a line stating that it works like detect thoughts, but also detects the presence of arcane or divine spellcasting ability, and perhaps the relative strength of each?

no, detect thoughts definitely does not allow you to know what class someone is (unless you are able to pick it up from their thoughts).

is there any other ability that allows someone to detect a spellcaster, and what type of spells they can cast? if not, i'd say we can add a line which says the obliviax just guesses who would be the best target. naturally, if it can observe someone casting a spell that's even better.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this before on another creature, but so far haven't been able to find it.

If I can't find it, it would be easy enough to create. Clerics have an aura of good that can be determined by detect good, for example, so we could just state that spellcasters have an aura with similar power levels that can be detected by the memory moss.
