off-hand damage

Bad Paper

First Post
whoops! Have I been doing this wrong? Does an off-hand weapon use only half of the Strength modifier...even if it's a double weapon? I hadn't bothered including that tidbit for, oh, the last five years or so. I guess I figured a double weapon didn't have an "off-hand."

thus: Joe has 18 Strength, and is using a quarterstaff. is his damage d6+4 with his first, third attacks and d6+2 with the second, fourth ones? Does anyone actually bother with this detail? I am tempted just to call everything d6+3 to let it all come out in the wash.

Quoth the SRD:

"A character can fight with both ends of a double weapon as if fighting with two weapons, but he or she incurs all the normal attack penalties associated with two-weapon combat, just as though the character were wielding a one-handed weapon and a light weapon."

But you have a good point, it says attack penalties, not damage penalties or all penalties...

"Off-Hand Weapon
When you deal damage with a weapon in your off hand, you add only ½ your Strength bonus. "

Looks like the glossary trumps all.

Are there any feats that allow you to retain your full Str bonus to your off hand attack?
No, but there is a feat in BoNS called "Shadow Blade" which lets you add your full dex bonus to damage with finessable weapons while in a shadow hand stance. It has no restrictions based on which hand you use.

Unless this has been changed you ONLY get the damage with Shadow Hand school weapons.

Dagger, Sai, Spiked chain, short sword, saingham, and unarmed strike.

I would love for it to be errated in that it was Finessable weapons.

Yes.

Not a good idea, I don't think. I guess you could run the math on it, or maybe get Nail to do it, but I doubt it would come out in the wash since I think the TWF would get screwed. He'll hit less often on the primary hand (the one he attacks with most often), which means he'll do less damage in the long run, especially if the double weapon has unequal base damage or unequal enhancements.

I think that there is actually a feat named Ambidexterity that lets you add your full str mod in your offhand attacks... It also reduses the penalties of using TWF by 1 point...

Correct me if i am wrong...
