D&D General On how many dice we use

When you get out your dice to play D&D, what do you get out on the table?

  • I use electronic dice - a phone app, VTT program, etc.

2-3 sets: I queue up dice for multiple attack, with color-coordinated attack and damage dice. So for my paladin, that's a purple set (2d20 b/c advantage happens, and 2d8 for base weapon damage), and a black set (same four dice but in black) - along with all my other d8's in case of smites.

If the dice get fired for the day, I'll pull out another color.

For other characters, the setup changes a bit to match their options. If I was playing a wizard at a live table I'd probably keep a dice roller app handy for spell damage, since that varies so much, but I'd have a few d20's handy for the basics.

Sadly, I've been forced to rely on electronic generators for VTT gaming since the pandemic forced us all to stay home. But the last of our gaming group just got the second vaccine dose today, so we should be back at the table together (with real, actual dice!) by the end of the month.

I gave up the math rocks a long time ago in favor of VTTs, even for in-person games.

Prior to that though, I had 10 sets of dice lovingly chosen for their readability at a distance, which I stored in the standard-issue purple-and-gold Crown Royal bag as mandated by the rules of D&D.
Are they still running the promo where if you buy a dice bag from them it comes with a free bottle of whisky?

I forget which spell it was, but one of the PCs in my newbie group only had one set and would have to roll xd10 when up-casting the spell, causing us to moan and groan each time. For Xmas, I gifted him 10d10 from different sets, including from a set I first bought in the 80s.

When I'm DMing, all the dice are out in the pool (which happens to be a large dice tray with a smaller dice tray inside it for the actual rolling). When I'm playing, I pare down to the dice I need - usually a couple of d20s (for adv/disadv), a set of %, and one of each other die type except for ones that I know I need multiples of for things like magic missile spells, fireballs, 10d6 energy blasts, 39 and 2/3 die pools in Shadowrun...

I have had about the same set since 3e time. I finally cleared out the d4 from 5 to only 2. I do not see magic missile scaling with caster level coming back.

I also 'forget' to bring the set to conventions so that I need to buy a new set. Some to help the local convention sellers and some to give away at the end.

As one of the other games I play is Warhammer in all its guises, I have lots of d6 dice. Maybe 200+? When I play Warhammer I always take a single set of d6, (usually around 30). I am very particular and think having matching dice adds to the experience.

For D&D I am actually a lot more haphazard. I have 4-5 sets all mixed up. I like having them all be different colours and types as I need to assign them to different monsters and NPCs in a battle. If I was a player rather than a DM I would definitely get myself a nice single set to use.
