One (Awesome) Gamer's Perspective: My Hobby is Gaming

Definitely 'gaming.'

And I have a similar reaction to 4e - it's not a matter of 'switching' or 'not switching,' it's a matter of adding another game to my library of options.

D&D, or at least d20, holds a slightly more important place in the pantheon because I write a lot for it, but it remains to be seen how that will work out in the future. When I sit down to actually play a game in my spare time, there are d20 variants high on the list (SWSE and M&M), but they're by no means alone there.

My secret shame is ... I love you just the way you are.

I said I love you, and that's forever
And this I promise from the heart
I could not love you any better
I love you just the way you are.

I think you've hit the nail on the head for why I've been so confused by the negative reaction. (I expected it, since I was around for the 3rd edition announcement, just didn't understand it.) I am a gamer. D&D is just one of many game systems that I play. Having a new edition wouldn't be any bigger change than sitting playing Mutants and Masterminds for a night. I didn't realize that some people see D&D 3e by itself as a hobby.

To borrow and expand upon one of Rel's analogies, in gaming terms I would say I'm "polyamorous." My true love is D&D, but she lets me sleep around a little.

Here's the thing: she's talking about getting an "upgrade." Some minor cosmetic stuff, and some complete overhauls in some areas. Some of the "baggage" she came with is gonna get "processed," and she says she'll run a whole lot smoother when it's all said and done.

It's got me pretty revved up, actually. :p

Thing is, if it turns out to be a disaster: no problem, I can always stick with 3.5, and the other games I get to play. I just _don't_ get all the doomsaying.
