One (Awesome) Gamer's Perspective: My Hobby is Gaming

Gaming.

'Why unnecessarily limit yourself?' would be one of my guiding principles as a gamer. There is so much fun to be had in so many ways, it's awesome. I love this hobby. :)

Also, there is a great deal for a GM/designer (in particular) or player to learn from looking at and trying out multiple systems. Some of the great advances in 3e (from AD&D) mightn't have happened at all, had at least a fair number of the major designers of it not already been experienced writers of game material for systems other than D&D/AD&D. For example.

Definitely gaming.

When my group wraps up the D&D adventure I'm running them through (next session is the last one, for real this time!), we'll be going back to our World of Darkness campaign (old WoD, because nWoD really butchered Mage), which somebody else is running. After that, who knows? I'd like to take the GM reins again, and do a little Spirit of the Century. In addition to our weekly variable game, I'm also in a monthly Amber game. And at the upcoming Chicago Gameday, I'm hoping to try out Burning Wheel and possibly Dread. Also, I really wanna do something with Mutants & Masterminds, True20, or Universalis, some day.

Roleplaying games are awesome, and D&D has never been the only one for me, or even my favorite.

...But man, I am definitely excited about 4e.

Great perspective...one that is often overlooked in all the hype. I found myself asking myself "Yeah, why should I get worked up over the hype? D&D isn't the ONLY game I play."

It's probably because it was the first RPG I ever played (waaaayyyy back in 1982) and I've played it ever since. But you're right, gaming is my hobby, not D&D.

There have been times when running D&D felt more like work than a hobby.

For some reason, a new edition of D&D is more exciting to me than a new edition of World of Darkness, Call of Cthulhu* or GURPS ever was. And I enjoy those other games just as much, if not more, than I do D&D.

If a new edition of my favorite game (Unisystem) were announced tomorrow, I wouldn't be as excited as I am about D&D 4e.

Honestly I have no idea why 4e has captured my imagination so much.

* Although to be fair...I don't think any Call of Cthulhu fan gets worked up about a new edition any more ("Look...new cover! And is that a new typeface?")

I consider myself a gamer because I love to play a variety of different kinds of games in general, but when it comes to RPGs, I am D&D player. I may play other games occasionally, but I always come back to D&D as the mainstay.

Then again, I believe that whatever version I happen to be playing, however far from the current iteration of the D&D rules, it is STILL D&D, so 4E, while seeming not to my taste, far from enrages me. :)

I'm definitely a D&Der, not a gamer. Maybe it has to do with my relatively limited leisure time, but even in the times past when I wasn't playing D&D, it wasn't because I was playing some other game, but because I wasn't playing any game.

I've tried a few other RPGs over the years, but never for more than a session or two. I play some more traditional games (cards like cribbage and bridge), but that's about it. Nothing has ever held my interest like D&D, and it appears (after 19 years or so) nothing ever will.

I'm a gamer who plays D&D because that seems to be one of the few games in town. I run it and spend money on it because I have a group of players I like and I want them (and myself) to have a good time. I'd rather run other games, and maybe after a time I'll get to do that with my group.
