Ongoing damage question

My group had some questions about on-going damage. He is the situation. We where attacked by a spider swarm that did X damage and 3 ongoing poison damage which a save would end.

So here is the question:
Do you save when you get hit on the spiders turn?
If not, it seems you would automatically take 3 points at the start of your turn, with no chance to save. Then at the end of your turn you would make your save.

The problem some people had was with the automatic 3 points, if you don’t get a save when hit.

So, how exactly does this work?

As described on pages 268-269 of the PHB, you take automatic damage at the start of your turn, and you save against conditions at the end of your turn. So yes, barring a power or ability that lets you roll a save before the start of your next turn, you automatically suffer the ongoing damage at least once.
