[OOC/FULL] Valusia

Destan

Citizen of Val Hor
Valusia PbP Game

This will be my first PbP game – as player or DM. You have been warned. :)

Disclaimer: This is not a campaign, per se, but rather an adventure comprised by a number of mini-quests. I hope to have the adventure finished prior to the winter holidays. At that time, we can decide whether to continue the game in campaign fashion.

Overview: This game will be conducted entirely in a Play-by-Post format here on ENWorld. The game will be played exclusively under 3.5 rules, utilizing only the 3.5 PHB, DMG, and MM.

Rate of Play: Players are expected to be able to respond at least once per day from Mon–Thurs, though need not always do so. The rate of play will vary according to the in-game situation (combat or not) and real world events (holidays, weekends, vacations, etc.). Rather than attempt to quantify required posts, I’d prefer to just play and determine what works best for the group as a whole. If there are some players who seem unable to meet any evolved commitment, we’ll address that as required.

Skill level: Players are expected to own the PHB and have a decent understanding of the 3.5 rules. I’ll be the first to admit I make mistakes – if you see that happen (and it will) I ask that you email me and not post it. We’ll adjust/rewind as necessary. Hopefully, this won’t be an issue.

Character Generation: Characters will begin at first level with an “elite array” of ability scores (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8). Starting gold will be those set values indicated in the PHB (p. 111). All alignments are allowed but players are expected to adhere to whatever choice they make. The DM will work with each player, individually via email, to iron out backgrounds and answer campaign-specific questions.

Please note that the characters will begin play in a provincial town and, as such, will have little knowledge of the world around them. This doesn't impact your choice of class, skill point allocation, etc. but I feel it's worth mentioning. It's an easy way to explain in-game a general lack of knowledge about the campaign world itself.

Players interested in playing the Valusian-specific half-troll race might want to check the The Sins’ Rogues Gallery thread. This is one of the very few exceptions to the 'only 3.5 core rules' stipulation.

Dice: Generally, the DM will roll all dice.

Setting: The game will be set within the world of Ostia Prim. Players may wish to familiarize themselves with my DM’ing style and get a glimpse of the campaign world by reading the The Sins of Our Fathers story hour.

Theme: Doom and gloom, simply put. Character mortality may be higher than what you might have become accustomed to in previous campaigns. Adult situations and themes may present themselves throughout the course of the game. A good litmus test, again, is to check the Sins story hour. If those types of situations do not appeal to you, then neither will this PbP campaign.

RP/Hack-n’-Slash: I’d imagine we’ll lean more toward role-playing due to the medium we’ll be using to play. This does not, by any stretch, imply that combat will not occur – it will. When combat does occur, expect it to be ambiguous and fluid – I seriously doubt we’ll be using maps, charts, Excel, etc.

Expectations: From me, you can expect that I will be as timely as possible with posts and replies. My ability to respond and the length of my posts will be heavily influenced by the real world. If this PbP experiment does not seem to be working (e.g. it’s not fun), then I’ll shut it down. Generally, I’m just stating up-front that I’m uncertain how this will pan out, and I’d like potential players to be understanding of that fact.

Interested Participants: If you are genuinely interested in being a player within this game, and will be able to actively contribute as indicated above, please shoot me an email. In it, please indicate what type of character you’d like to play. Don’t go overboard with details – I don’t want to waste anyone’s time, and I understand writing a background without the campaign information in your hands is well-nigh impossible. If you’re familiar with the Sins story hour, you may want to indicate that as well. For obvious reasons, I’d like to have readers who already have a feel for the game world and my style.

A sample email would be along these lines:

“I’d like to play a half-troll monk like Vath in the Sins’ story hour. I’ve played D&D for six years and have been playing 3.5 since it arrived on the shelves. Like you, I’ve never participated in a PbP game. I’d prefer to have Ilmater be my deity, but will adjust as necessary for whatever meshes well with the other players. I have a boring, cubicle job and will be able to post on a daily basis at a minimum. My handle on ENWorld is Fred. I haven’t read your story hour. Other than the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, I should be around and be able to participate.”

I’d ask you not to post your proposed character concept or stats. I’d rather that type of information be revealed in-game, if at all.

I’m planning on accepting four players – assuming I get enough interested folks. I’m not going to play favorites, and those who play in my real campaign(s) need not apply. I’ll simply choose the four character concepts that seem most appealing to me and to the type of PbP campaign I’m envisioning.

If we have a large number of willing players, I’ll probably send out detailed campaign information and ask for a second, follow-up email which addresses potential characters’ backgrounds in-depth.

Character Death: In the event of character death, one of two things will occur: 1) The player will generate a new character, so long as he/she enjoys the PbP campaign, or 2) The player will “sit out” whilst another player gets an opportunity to play. The second option is preferred but will be dependent upon the number of players, if any, waiting for their own opportunity to play. I’d like to reserve the right to keep any player who has been an active participant, regardless of how many players are on deck. Note that these options take precedence even over in-game resurrections or similar spells, though a player invited to try again may opt to have his character revived (if such an option exists in-game).

Projected Start: Undetermined. The sooner the better.

I'll give it a shot. I'd love to play in a unique campaign world. I'll work up a character and send you the specifics.

Thanks for the opportunity.

That was quick, Celt. :)

We'll be starting in Argos, a collection of stilted hovels on the muddy banks of southern Raider's Bay.

I'm interested. Got a few questions though:

Level? I assume level 1, since we use the PHB gold.

Gold? From the table, do we roll, do you roll, do we pick average or do we pick max?

Races? Only those from the PHB, their various subraces from the MM, or all ECL 0 races from the MM?

Good questions.

Yep - first level.

Gold? From the table, do we roll, do you roll, do we pick average or do we pick max?

We'll use those numbers in () next to starting gold ranges for each class. Thus, a barbabrian would start with 100 gp, a druid with 50 gp, etc. Use that money to purchase equipment - clothing is free.

Races? Only those from the PHB, their various subraces from the MM, or all ECL 0 races from the MM?

Only races from the PHB with the addition of the Valusian half-troll.

I have to get in on this!

I just love your story hour. I'm thinking Elven Ranger (2 weapon focus) Quarter staff master. I'll have him worked up in a few minutes. and send him directly to you.

Name: Oakynn Mac.
