"Thog not get references."

- Me neither...

I actually had to google this episode because I didn't get any of the last half of the strip. "Aqua Rake?" "Fenix Down?"

Uhh....

And even after I found out it was FF based I still don't quite get why they ran! :p

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Most of it went over my head. So far over my head they didn't even need to call out the "low flying airplanes" warning.

Oh, and I thought you were going with the "-me neither" to point out that the OP didn't give us the reference link some so badly need! ;)

As the owner of Final Fantasy VII I actually got all the jokes in that strip. For those of you that didn't, just trust me that they are funny. I did think that was going to explain the leprechaun costume. Maybe the next strip will fill in that gap.

You mean Final Fantasy 6, not 7. The best one, not the overrated one.

For those of us who are of the proper generation to get the reference, this was really, really funny. Totally out of the blue, and entertaining.

I didn't realize Rich Burlew was a videogame fan. Cool.

But I'm not sure if Mog should be called the useless mascot character. Mog rocked.

Come on, people. This is an obvious reference to Final Fantasy 6 (or FF3 for the Super Nintendo).

The airship is owned by the white-haired Setzer Gabbiani, a wandering gambler.
The blue warrior is Cyan Garamonde, a noble swordsman.
The blonde with the white cape is Celes Chere, a sword-mage of sorts.
The girl with the green hair is Terra Branford, a half-magical creature and one of the "main" characters of the FF6 story.
The young mushroom-hat girl is Relm Arrowny, a painter/monster summoner
The old guy behind her is Strago Magus, Relm's grandfather and Blue Mage (a wizard that specializes in the magic/special abilities of monsters).
Nale is disguised as Locke Cole, a thief and the impromptu leader of the FF group.
Thog is disguised as Mog, a magical creature that has a special kind of dance magic. (The Moogle race feature prominently through the older FF games.)

When Cyan comments on not having the "Magic" ability due to it being only the first part of the story... in the FF game, characters lean magic through beings (called Espers) in the form of crystal shards (called Magicite). They are equipped like, well, equipment, and they gain "spell points" (similar to xp) after fights. When a spell is 100% "learned", the character adds it to his "sheet". At the start of the game, only two characters (Terra and Celes) begin with the ability to use magic.

"Aqua Rake" is a special ability that Strago can learn from a monster; it creates a water-based attack that hits all enemies with bubbles (IIRC).

"Fenix Down" is a feather from a Phoenix that revives characters who have swooned, or dropped to 0 HP. The spelling is a result of bad translation, or to save character space on the item screen.

Thog says "Kupo", which is a common expression among Moogles. I'm not terribly sure what it means.

And I don't think they ran... I think they got hurled off the airship. :)

One other thing of note is that the blonde guy in the last two panels is Edgar, the king and master engineer, and the thing in his hands is his armor-piercing drill weapon. Elan should be lucky it wasn't his instant death chainsaw (with hockey mask).

FF3 on an SNES emulator got me through many a college lecture...

Definitely liked the strip :)

And they're definitely getting thrown off the airship, not running.

Kupo kupo!

The best part of moogles was the moogle charm - no random encounters!
