I think V's wrong, a high level elf wizard is a lot better with a bow than a 1st level warrior.

Maybe for BAB, but we know from some strip (I can't remember which) that V has a Strength penalty, which might make him/her incapable of killing a hobgoblin with one arrow. And from the look of it he/she has already taken a lot of damage, and elves have a Consitution penalty, too. (For that matter, we don't know that he/she has a Dex above 11 anyway.)

Being able to kill a single hobgoblin in the first round isn't exactly worth dying for, at least to V.

I'm assuming it's a typo, but with OOTS you can never tell. ;)

In panel 7 the female soldier running away says "We have to defend ourelves too,..."

So is she running to save some elves or just herself

Oh and now V's out of spells.

Considering V has usually preferred AoE spells and similar things without ranged touch attacks... I believe he's not too dextrous. Nor strong. Nor sturdy.

By V's standards of effectiveness, he's much, much less useful with a bow, and doing base bow damage, not to mention any strength penalties he may have (I don't think we've ever seen him use a weapon actually). He might have a decent BAB, but he probably has a strength penalty, and for somebody used to throwing 26d6 Disintegrates around, 1d8-1 is pretty weak.
