Opponent grappled, using a bow, and sneak attack…

Has anyone ever noticed before that if an opponent is grappling an ally and you are a bow user with sneak attack (supposedly a precision based attack…) that you can fire your bow at the opponent and add that sneak damage since they are denied their dexterity modifier, but yet you still have a 50% chance to hit your ally. Does that make sense at all with sneak attack being a precision shot??? Am I missing something?

Well, there is a difference between melee range and a grappling range. In fact, if your ally is grappling with an opponent, your ally is occupying the same square as the opponent. So the risk is greater.

If you want, houserule it by decreasing the chance to hit your ally to 25%.

No.

And since your ally is denied his Dex bonus as well, if you screw up, he takes the full +Xd6.

This is why adventurers carry swords :)

I'd consider rule-0'ing Precise Shot to remove the % chance of hitting the wrong grappler. Off the top of my head it seems reasonable...

Perhaps reasonable, but broken.
