Optimal cleric/wizard builds

It looks like we might be making new characters soon, and my friend wants to play a character like Hermione from Harry Potter. She envisions the character with a wand of cure light wounds in one hand, and Magic Missile in the other. We’re playing a Forgotten Realms game with a 28 standard point buy creations system. She’s looking at the luck and/or travel domains, what’s the Enworld community’s take on this?

If you go that route, just be sure to have a decent Int for scroll use. Scrolls require that you have a high enough stat to cast the spell and there's no way around it.

Another alternative is to take a level of cleric and then just advance as a wizard.

Or of course there's the Mystic Theurge, although the general consensus is that such a character is very weak starting out.

Sounds good, our DM is a little bit of a penny pincher, so when it comes to us having enough money to buy scrolls I worry that it wouldn't work out. I'll look into the Magic Domain, but I was wondering how a cleric/wizard combo would work, or if anyone had tried it before. We did a pickup game were we tested out the 1 level of cleric, the rest Wizard approach (we had a clc1/wiz3 character) and she was pretty happy with it's performance, but we still wondered if it was viable to increase the cleric and Wizard levels together. I'm going to look at the Mystic Theurge...[looking]...It looks good, how would you advace it, I'm thinking that I'd get the three levels of cleric first. I'd like to hear from any Mystic Theurges out there if it works for them...

MT is not a particulary powerful class, especially in the beginning it's pretty weak, once you started multiclassing. At around 8th level it starts to get decent.

However, it grants a huge selection of magic utility. It's really mostly that, a utility spellcaster, since it absolutely lacks the power of a single class cleric or wizard, because of the lower total spell leve, but the broader spell selection gives it more versatility.

I would simply go singleclass bard. You can make a decent spellcaster with UMD, still have a lot of utility stuff besides, can do some archery and will easily get all the knowledge noone ever needs :D

Bards get too few spells to make that a good choice. Also, a character based on Hermirone should know tons of spells.

And how would you translate that into D&D? A wizard who knows tons of spells needs more money and more time than other wizards. It has nothing to do with the character. That's why I proposed UMD.

Nah, the character should be some scholarly type... wizard or cleric of an appropriate deity (like Savras, Azuth, or Mystra in FR), to fit.

Mystic Theurge or Loremaster would fit this image very well, IMHO.
