Origins report

Wizards of the Coast had a great show---gave away lots of stuff. The GPA's/Diet Evil stock exchange seemed to be a big hit. I also enjoyed Bastion Press/MEG/EN booth and Looney Labs. Actually, there wasn't a booth I didn't enjoy! Eilfin Publishing was giving away a quick start guide to Undiscovered; Palladium was giving away The Rifter #17; Guardians of Order was selling the Tri-Stat core book for $1; free copies of the Player's Journal #1 were available. The jail cell (see pics above) were very popular. I saw lots of people playing at the LAN party; lots of people in costume (don't know if they were all LARPers or just adding flavor); lots of people playing games everywhere (not just in the meeting rooms, but also in the hallways and on the stairs, etc); lots of people having fun. I really enoyed my first con---I even think my wife had fun!

Last night had dinner with some guys from the Industry. I don't recall their names, but I was sitting by a guy from White Wolf and FFG. Both were great guys and I got some great insight into the industry. Last day today, will be leaving here shortly.

Well it's over and we've all gone our different ways... based on the cons I've been at I liked this con best.. but I think the company/personalities probably made the event for me.

For everyone who stopped in and said hi while I was at the EN/MEG booth, it's great to see the community and put faces to some of the names. I regret not having the time or money for Gen Con since it's so close to home. It sounds like there will be fun to be had all around in Indy.

Thread Jumper

I hope you don't mind my thread-jumping!

I too just wrapped up another great Origins. The fifth or sixth in a row for me. I ran two events: Mutants & Masterminds: Ultimate X-Men vs. the Avengers, and Return to the Lair of the Fire Giant King (a 3rd Edition D&D, 14th level adventure). Special thanks to Rory who was a huge help in running the M&M scenario (with my limited experience). Really a GREAT game. Worth a look, certainly worth demo'ing at a con. If you've got it to spend, it's definitely worth picking up. A beautiful book. (*cough* Origins Awards *cough*) And, my apologies go out to my DnD group. I know I wracked up enough "cruel points" to last a year, but I hope you'll hop into another game with me next year!

Both were a blast. I had GREAT groups. These were some of the best RP'ing groups I've had the pleasure of DM'ing at Origins. The RPG's are definitely on the comeback! Agreed on the assessment that this was a great RPG year, and that the DM's really seemed to have it together this year (thanks to JP especially for all the great ideas!).

Organization: unparrelled. Kudos especially to Mr. Scott Bagley who organized and coordinated the events. Fantastic job, easily the smoothest run con I've been to in Columbus, and probably among my best experiences at a convention (including over 5 Gen Con and every Origins in Columbus). Nice job!

Dealer room was hopping. Wizkids was hot...but so was Wizards, and MANY of the other d20 booths. (At least on Saturday and Sunday). I walked out with tons of new d20 product (mostly deep discounted stuff), and the folks who garnered most of my money were: Green Ronin, White Wolf, and Fantasy Flight Games. Nice job, nice product, I can't wait to read it! Another year's worth of product to dig through! I was tempted by Fast Forward and the new Dragonlance campaign setting...but held off. Still most looking forward to Unearthed Arcana's pending release.

That's all for this year! I hope to see everyone again soon!

Stormy,

Glad to hear you had a great time sounds like a blast. GenCon should be just as much fun and I can at least have fun with you and the wife :)

I'm looking forward to hearing the war stories when you return.

Just curious if you got any SL stuff ash at the WW booth?

I met Sandra Garrity, and if you're listening Nobeard, she not only remembers you, but she went to the ENWorld thread where you talked about her fixing up your mini and printed the whole thread out, "because he said such nice things!" She's a real sweet lady.
I'm listening! :)

She really is a nice person. I have finally added a picture of the painted mini to my "Meeting Sandra Garrity" page. Scroll down to the bottom--he needs a touch-up, because I still use him on the battlemat. I think I might touch him up and then retire the mini (just to preserve it). And I've got to find the manual so I can figure out how to take good "micro" pictures with the digital camera, but you get the idea.

Glad you had fun at Origins! Got any pictures of your wife's CAV army--floral unit? Flower power!! :D

My origins experience. 3.5 news

Drove from philadelphia to Columbus wednesday, got there by 2pm do play in Veluna Day of Courage, where I got to play 2 Veluna region Living Greyhawk games before the show.

Thursday I didn't have anything prereged, so I went to the line for adding events at 8am. I got trhough it by 9:10, and ran to a MTG sealed deck Onslaught block tournament, my first MTG tourney in about 2 years. I won my first game, lost my second, and dropped to go check the dealer room briefly.

2pm I was supposed to judge Living Arcanis, which I knew zip about (but had read the mod) so was happy there were enough Arcanis GMs so I could judge LG Face Value, which I was also slotted for on friday. My table seemed to enjoy themselves.

Then I played my only other non RPG for the weekend, a table of GIANT-SIZED Settlers of Catan. Standard game (my favorite) but on a big miniatures seized board. Somewhat awkward to trade with the player accross from you, but had fun. Tied for second.

I checked the dealers room for Citizen Games, to get a copy of the masterscreen (4 panel). They didn't have a booth, but the book showed them sharing one with 2 other small companies. They weren't really there, because of their recent issues with company control. Some copies of dungeonner, but no masterscreen. I finally found a local dealer who said he could get one from his store the next day, so I picked it up then. Very nice. Heavy board, and not warped (the 3 panel one I almost boght one was warped)

Friday began with my second Face Value table, a low APL one this time. Again fun was had. We finished in 3.5 hours (an omen!) so I left for the dealer room. now I saw that wotc had the 3.5 books availble for perusal.

Oh, and I was looking up the Boccob's Blessed Book (my wizards
obsession). Since scribing was going down to 100gp per page, and spells at 1 page per level, I was tring to guess the new BBB price.

It went up.

Price about 12000 gp I think.

Because it holds 1000 pages, that can be copied into for free.

But the desciption said "without paying the 25 pg per page cost"

huh? I thought 3.5 said the cost was 100gp.

Check PHB to confirm. Yep 100gp.

I asked a designer standing there.

His face fell.

I caught the first erratta

I got a promo minature by asking about the minis. They look much more like true 25mm then the Reaper/Chainmail/Warhammer 28-30mm. maybe it's mold shrinkage. The promo was the dwarven axefighter. The paintjob isn't as bad as the WOTC site makes it look, but its not stellar by any means.

I picked up alot of other minis too. Some Armorcast barrels, a Warmachine Cryx box set, and 2 khador guys. Iron Wind/Partha had some dinosaurs and a $2/ounce bitz box where I got a giraffe a wolf and a snake. They also have a nice "skinny" chimera.

Wizkids definitely seemed like the more active booth. Maybe because their demos take more space, or it was the mageknight nationals (I miss having the MTG nationals at origins) I don't know if this was a new idea in booth design, but I noted a prevalence of chest-high small tables (like the gulp-and-go tables you see in mall food courts) being used alot for tiny little demos you could play. Nice idea since you don't have to stoop down/sit to get grapped walking by and play a demo.

More later. I have lots of pics on my firends digicam, but I need to see him to upload them.

Of course! Most of it!!! I also got to thumb through two of the new class books that will be out at Gen Con. These will both definitely end up in my collection. The stuff written by Piratecat, made me stop in my tracks and read it, standing right there in the dealer's room! Not easy to do, it looks excellent!

I haven't even taken a full inventory of all the stuff I got (typically, unless it's a big book, I do most of my shopping every year at Origins, so I'm practically a year behind on most of the SL stuff). I like the looks of everything I picked up, however!
