[OT] America's Army

Only if you are a true flagwaving Yank who likes nothing more than the government sponsoring the militarisation of leisure time.

On the other hand I play loads of counterstrike;)

One thing that struck me as kind of strange (from a gamer perspective), is that both teams think they are American Army and they see the other team as the enemy. This must mean that the weapons are identical stat-wise. Pretty lame if you ask me, there should be a tangible difference between the .50 Barret and the SVD Dragunov, don't you think?

The reason they force you to register is so that you can qualify for assorted things... for example, you can't do parajumping unless you have passed jump school with high enough marks. Nor can you select the sniper rifle unless you first hit a certain goal with iron sights on an M16 (36 of 40 targets at assorted distances), then you go through sniper school to boot.

Second, it is a lot of fun. The combat is great, the graphics are good, the netplay is solid and lag-free for the most part (A lot better than the current compitition... miles ahead of Battlefield 1942, for example), the weapons are varied and fun, and there are a lot of tactics involved in play. There aren't many games where you will hear people say "Get down, I'm laying covering fire on the bunker", or "Someone set up a crossfire with me in the pump room", but this is one of them. There are a lot of neat touches... being able to go prone (not just crouch), being able to roll while you're prone, guns jamming, leaning side to side, extendable bipods on some weapons to increase accuracy, actualy having to time shots with your breathing paterns when trying for accurate shots, grenades that are suitably usefull, etc.

I'd give it two thumbs up, myself. And it's free to boot.

It's done for balance reasons... No side has tangibly better equipment to level the playing field. ON THE OTHER HAND, if you kill a member of the oposing side and take his weapon, it is different from your existing weapon. Actualy, I applaud the way the did it... It's an elegant solution to the issue of "balance" vs "realism".

To elaborate on the above comment. If your on defence on a map, you think you are fighting off terrorists. IE, you have army gear and army uniform, while the other team has terrorist masks and clothes, and has AK-47s and stuff. If you are assulting the same map, the defenders are now terrorists with AK-47s. Both sides see the others as terrorists, but both sides are using the same weapons (IE, that terrorist might look like he has an AK47, but to him he has an M-16). But upon his death, that AK-47 actualy becomes an AK-47 to be picked up and used by the other team.

Hell, I say if the government wants to spend my money to develop a game, I'm at least gonna play it.

IMHO, it's a better game than counterstrike. It has realism where Counterstrike only makes claims thereto.

Another thing that is pretty strange with this project is what it's aimed to do. Obviously America's Army hope that more people will enlist to the army (so they can get a broader base to chose there soldiers from). Can we agree on this?

Right. I used to be an avid Counter-Strike-player and the one thing I learned from playing the game is- In a firefight it's impossible to stay alive. Yup. Completely impossible. I mean even the best CS-players around can (on a public server) get stats like 30-1. That is 30 kills and 1 death. Those who can score this are truly 1337. Now, this only tells me to avoid the army at all costs because if you end up in a fire fight you are dead as a dodo no matter how skilled you are.

One other thing is that fire fights are utterly unfair. I mean you run around ruling the battlefield with your Colt Car 15 and suddenly... *smack* ...some camper with an AWP got you in his sights and dead you are.

If this game is going to teach the youth anything it's: Don't enlist for it will kill you and there is nothing you can do about it.

Well, it's just my two cents and I hope things work out for the US Army in this matter because I'd love to download US Airforce any day soon. ;)
