[OT] Anyone got Heroes of Might and Magic 4?

How does the ability to have your hero enter the battle and be a participant play in?

How is the music? I loved the HoMaM 3 music, and if it's anything like that, I'll probably grow to like it a lot.

Does the isometric battlelands enhace the gameplay for you?

Is there a necromantic town? Is it still cool? :)

I have a blast with heroes in battle. Barbarians (Might) can deal out serious damage once they get a few levels under their belts. I don't think Hero stats modify troop stats like they used to. Instead, certain skills, such as Tactics, so a Knight could be better at leading an army then, say, a Cleric.

I do miss the grid. Can't add much more to the conversation at this point.

is it really??? oooh me want! me want! ... ironically, my mom plays HOMMIII more than i do, so she'll be extatic! :D
(gotta love a mom who plays more video games than you do!)

Wow, does that make me miss my Mom.

there's ..... NO....... grid??!!

I find that VERY worrying.
I literally didn't like combat nearly as much without the grid option on.
There's no option to turn it on in HOMM4?

How are the colors on the game?
Are they too garish, or out-there, as was said?

I read mentoin of an "Elite" edition? any ideas?

Overall - would you rather be playing HOMM3 3 months from now, or do you think you'll prefer to play HOMM4?

Fans of this kind of stuff (like me) are in for a very good quarter. Disciples II is out, Heroes 4 is out, and Age of Wonders 2 is slotted for next month. Whoo-hee!! :D

I am not really much of a computer gamer, but HoMM3 really appealed to me.

What's this Disciples 2 and Age of Wonders you speak of? ;)

And what's a cheap place to pick up new computer games?

desciples and age of wonders are like heroes, in that you have a hero, and make armies, and build buldings in your towns/castles.

age of wonders had a very tolkien-esque feel to it, i have only played the Descilples I demo, but D II looks really nice.

heroes 4 took a bit of both of those games, with the heroes being used in tactical combat (from aow) and the whole 'you can only build this structure or this structre, but not both' strategy from Desciples.

heroes can still modify / enhance the critters in your armies, but you need the 'tactics' feat, i think, and some other leadership type feats in order for your 'area of influence' to get big enough for your armies to be truely effected.

i just can't wait to play it.

reapersaurus, I know you can still download the demo for Age of Wonders 1 without any problem at http://www.ageofwonders.com. In fact, I oughtta look and see if they have a demo for the sequel yet...

Like you, I don't actually play (or like) many computer games, except for good turn-based fantasy strategy games! :)

I bought Heroes 4 last Friday when it came out... and my friend is a Heroes 3 fanatic who just got a week of vacation. This is my first lengthy session on the computer since then!

Gory details follow...

Heroes 4 has hot-seat play, but no network/internet play yet. The soundtrack is good but sometimes choppy (that may be due to cheap sound card... not sure). They've apparently gone back to laying on the opera rather thick when viewing castles. All the tracks have that "Ride of the Valkyries" (aka "Kill Da Wabbit", if that's what you're more familiar with) feel.

A lot of map objects have been "automated" so the hero doesn't have to return to them all the time to realize its benefits. Those windmillers, waterwheelers, and leprechauns give you your extortion resources each week even if the hero never returns. You can also use caravans to rake in a bunch of creatures from your other castles and all those creature dwellings your heroes have found. All it costs is time (based on how far away the stuff is)... and the money to recruit the critters of course!

Creatures trickle in daily rather than landing on your castle in one big lump at the start of the week. So weeks don't really matter much any more, especially since there's no "Weeks of the Wombat" anymore. There's still "Months of...", but I've yet to see one actually fall on a creature I have so I can't tell you what it does.

Bad Things:

1. No network multiplayer (depends on how much you do that... I never did more than once or twice).

2. No random map generator.

3. Small number of initial scenarios, almost none of them my preferred L or XL size maps.

4. No maps that allow 2 players to be allies (easy to work around, though, with their map editor).

You can make more maps, but the combo of #2 and #3 means a player has to find someone else to make maps if he wants to be surprised by anything.
