Only 2 items found by ad-aware (registry things). Guess I haven't been a prodigious downloader of stuff. :p

I have a firewall, and in reality, it is something that my ISP strongy reccomends that their clients install. Frankly I'm glad that it blocks attempts by trojans to connect to the computer and all the other assorted stuff. An additonal perk is that it kill ads and pop-up. :D

Anyhow...back to the regularly scheduled paranoia... j/k

Wish I knew enough to install a firewall on my computer, but I am not that techinical in stuff like that. Sounds like is saves a lot of grief.

It might be outdated but certainly can help in the interim.

I suppose that's true, but there are alternatives to AdAware. Much like virus scanners, adware scanners are only as good as their definitions.

You could always check out spywareinfo.com for some recommendations on replacement software (at least until Lavasoft gets Adaware back on track).

Dragongirl: I would assume that most firewalls install just like any other program, and have default settings that are good for most users. The one that I have was painless to install.

What program is that? :) And is it free?

Norton Personal Firewall; no it was not free.

Disadvantage: not free.
Fortunately there is a mail in rebate. :)

Advantage: updates available (free for a while and then by subscription)

Dragongirl,

I'm running the free zonealarm at home. Admittedly, it was set up by a friend but he tells me it's really straightforward. Basically, any time any software tried to set up a connection without my prior approval, a window pops up asking whether I allow it and whether I want to allow it ot disallow it in the future.

You can find a free download here :

http://www.zonelabs.com/ in the download section.

Hope it helps !
