Who? The Star Wars fans? ;)
Heh. It's a definite possibility. Though I think it's more the kind of people who reason that a fantasy movie is intrinsically inferior. Some of the old comments on FotR indicate exactly this, people said that they liked the movie but were voting 1 because they thought it shouldn't be ranked above the classics. It was mainly during the not-so-short period when FotR was above Casablanca, Godfather, etc. They were justifying themselves by saying that they were just correcting the results of the overenthusiasm of fanboys. Except that the IMDB only uses the votes from the frequent voters to build the ladder, so the people who brought FotR to #1 were mostly fairly expert and informed moviegoers.

Now, I am not angry at these people because they believe that fantasy movies have a set limit on how high they can go. I'm certainly not angry because they think Godfather should be above LotR (heck, I could even agree. Maybe.)

I am angry at deliberate statistic poisoning. It's unfair. It doesn't fix a perceived mistake; instead, it makes the whole ladder statistically less significant. Ideally, one should vote without knowing how the others voted.

Perhaps. There is also a segment of the Tolkien fanbase that either boycotted film one due to the changes or disliked it so much after seeeing it that they are boycotting film 2 and three.

Then why on Earth are you waiting a whole extra three days?

It's not all that practical to go to a 7pm showing and then go to work the next morning (and the two closest theaters two me don't seem to be doing a convenient 5:30 or 6 pm showing). So I'd go on the 21st, except that I'm going to be on airplanes most of the day. I'll probably end up seeing it on the 22nd or 23rd; I have to do some sibling bonding while I'm visiting family in the frozen north anyway :)
