[OT] Mister Rogers Dead at 74

What a shame. He was a good man.

While I would never allow any of my kids (not that I plan to have any) watch other junk, like Sesame Street,.. I would have had no problem letting them watch MRN.

He was one of the few positive forces in the life of children.

My Mr. Rogers Story

Like many of you, I grew up watching Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. When I got older, I thought I'd left it behind.

Then, when I graduated from college (University of Connecticut, 1991), guess who our commencement speaker was?

Yep, Fred Rogers.

It was a unique experience. UCONN is a BIG school - it had two graduation ceremonies of about 10000 people apiece each year. And yet, in the auditorium, when Mr. Rogers began to speak, it was completely silent. You just knew that every single person in the place knew exactly who this man was, and not one of them had anything but respect and fondness for him.

His message was simple... think of the children. It's one that stays with me today.

He will be missed.

really? I thought I read of a lot of grumbling at the time they chose him.

Personally, I could think of no one more appropriate.

You know, at the time of the announcement, that was the case. There was a lot of grumbling. I was one of the grumblers.

But once he got on that podium, the grumbling was GONE.

Ah....one of my home town's (Latrobe, Pennsylvania) most famous sons has gone away...He'll be missed.

He was from Latrobe? I didn't know that. Time to raise a pony bottle (or at the very least, a Yeungling).

For what it's worth, his show is still going, with the new host he chose, 'Neighbor Abor', I believe.

As for today's Kids TV, I think you'll find there's a pretty broad spectrum. Back in the '70s, you had PBS and that was pretty much it, with a few noticable exceptions (like, say, 'Hot Fudge', 'The Magic Garden' or 'New Zoo Review'). Preschoolers have at least three channels to choose from most days, namely Nick Jr., Disney and PBS. Noggin focuses on slightly older kids, as far as I can tell, but they do have a variety...but since I don't get it, I can't comment as much.

Reading that post made me laugh. Not laugh in the happy sense of course, but ironic one.

I mentioned this on another message board, and someone responded that they'd probably be afraid to turn on the TV ever again. "NO! Daddy will point and say, HE'S DEAD! HE'S DEAD!"

Well I'll miss Mr. Rogers and the trolly. I used to love that little thing.

Along with Bob Ross and his happy trees, and his fro, and the way he had to put a little cabin in nearly every single picture he painted.

Now that I think of it a lot of the host of former PBS shows have died. I'm just getting too old.

You know, I haven't even thought of the show in years. But I remember being a little kid and watching him on TV every day. It was my favorite children's show. I'm surprised by how much his death saddens me. I feel like an uncle has died, or something.
