[OT-Rant] What is UP with Talon Comics??

Don't fret too much, we're going to get him caught up if it kills us, it's our necks on the line too now...if no one orders from him, they can't order from us right now, because we don't really have a way for them to do so...Paladinwife

This thread has made me decide to order from Talon Comics the minute he's able to fill it. :)

I am taking the same stance (no free bag needed, heh), Derek has been good to me in the past.

Since I don't need any gaming books right now, I can wait.

It is shame so many people have run into so many problems- it must be very frustrating.

Paladin and Talon Comics,

I too have a wife with a degenerative debilitating disease. We have dealt with it for over two years and will the rest of our lives (we are both 31). I know what a stress it causes and that any other stress outside of that escalates the oredeal way out of proportion. I was cut from my job 4 months ago, so money has been tight. I will start a new job on Tuesday, so we are going to Atlanta to DragonCon and the Improv gathering this weekend to celebrate. It takes a lot out of my wife (she will be in bed for a week afterwards), but we get the most enjoyment we can now.

I guess the point is this. I have gotten some small consulting work to help us through the past 4 months. I know how much it means to have someone call you up and say they have some work for you to do, any work. I have taken a chunk of my DragonCon money and placed an order with Talon. It is for things that I can wait longer to get. I am placing my faith in Derek, just like I hoped people would place faith in me these past few months. I have very few friends (it is hard to get out much with my wife's condition) but they have come through in this crisis with support. Derek is lucky to have good friends to help him too. By the way, I also placed an order with Gamer's Bag about a week ago for a few dice bags and such.

I am trying to support the people I like- my FLGS gets most of my money, the enworld store gets my money because I love this sight and want to support it, and I hope Talon and Gamer's Bag can join this group.

Good Luck,

Mike

Let me also express my support for Derek and his wife. I for one will continue to support them.

For those who have complained you might need to take a moment and think before you get so mad. This is a game you are buying after all.

I've never bought anything from Talon...probably never will (nothing about this thread has anything to do with that...I have my own sources I already happily deal with).

The only thing that concerns me is that a few posters mentioned that he cashed their checks without sending their orders. It is my understanding (at least with credit card orders) that legally the vender cannot post the sale to the credit card company until AFTER he has shipped his the order. I don't know if that is the true...it is just what I've heard (I heard it when I ordered a computer from a company that went bankrupt before shipping my order...fortunately they followed that policy). Whether or not Talon is obligated legally to follow that rule, he should follow it. It just makes good business sense and avoids having to make refunds for orders you are unable to fill...

Paladin (or Paladinwife), since you seem to be speaking on Talon's behalf here, I would suggest that you get a statement directly from Talon that addresses the concerns raised here and post it. Personal problems are an understandable reason for having these kind of troubles (although 3 months seems a bit long...if it is that bad, then bow out for a while), but a statement as to when the issues will be resolved and a promise of a refund to those who don't wish to wait would go a long way to satisfying most of the people here...

Reply Directly from Derek

Derek answers the questions about payments:

"Basically, I use PayPal buttons because they're easiest to set up and pretty much everyone can set up a PayPal account. Everything on my site has a "release date" or an "available" or "in stock" above it letting you know the status of items. Of course that's not fail-safe as sometimes 5 people will order my last 4 Dragon #292s and then I'm out of stock."

"When you order using PayPal it says right on the shopping cart what you're being charged. There's no misdirection. When I get advanced payment this go towards my gaming orders as everything I order I have to pay COD for. Since I have to pay COD (to the book distributor) I have to have the money before hand. If not, I can't get the books. COD isn't great but once it's paid I don't have to worry about a bill or anything."

"When I take credit cards directly over the phone or however I don't put a charge on those until a couple of days before I get the product from my distributor or the day before I send it out. I know that not everyone trusts giving out their credit card number so that's not always an option."

"Believe me I'm not going to rip anyone off. I've been doing this for over 7 and half years and I'm not going anywhere. I may have gotten behind but I'm not ripping anyone off."

On the not posting here problem:

Here's a link on his site of a screen print he made when this first started happening (it's still the same today.) As you can see, posting would be HARD:

If any computer gurus have an idea of what's going on, please let us know. Apparently if someone sends him a link directly to a thread he can then read it. Otherwise, he's hosed.

I've had my computer do exactly the same thing! It was a while ago, and after not using it for a while I tried it again and it worked. It looks like he's on OS X though, oddly it happened to me on my PC, but my Mac worked fine. No idea what the problem is. Perhaps he could try using Mozilla or Opera, and see if it does the same thing.

one order for derek, about six months ago. fulfilled with no problem.

sorry to hear he's still having trouble, but it sounds like he needs to get his head above water pretty soon or no one here will be ordering from him. i gotta believe this place was a nice source of business.

Please everyone don't think that he's a posting maniac over at Nutkinland. That is not the case. The last time he was really on and posting frequenctly was dealing with this very topic.
