The other thing that really stank was the whole downloading Data's memory into B4 thing.

"Why are we doing this, Geordi?"
"It's necessary for the subsequent plot, Commander Riker, that we do something extremely stupid and utterly useless, like filling an obviously planted android with high security StarFleet knowledge. I'm sorry, but that's the best explnation I can give."
"What's this thing on the back of B4's head, Geordi?"
"It's a plot device, Commander. Now go away before you make me act sensibly."

Well, it's true they should have run some kind of diagnostic, but when they activated B4, he is found to be primitive by Data's standard.

Then again, when Data was activated, I'm sure the Federation have ran all kind of diagnostics and probes, and find him to nothing wrong with him ... and yet, he has a deeply imbedded program that allowed him to look for his creator, Dr. Soong, if he is within close range. You did remember that episode, right?

So it is not so much about B4 that concerns me, it's Data himself. Last we saw him, he has an emotion chip installed. He hasn't made use for it, to the point of denying it ever existed in this movie. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I give it 3/5. It's only just come out on this side of the Pond, so I only managed to see it today.

Firstly - it was amazing to see someone I know up on screen. I thought Shinzon was a good performance from a not very good villain. Tom Hardy gives a good account of himself, being dangerous in the right places, suitably mad when called for, and a very strong presence on the bridge of his ship.

Secondly - visually, it's fun.

HOWEVER:

The aforementioned scene with Data, B4 and Geordie was badly written.

The section on the planet when they find B4 - why? Why do those people suddenly show up and start shooting at them? If the place is uncharted, surely having a flying ship and a buggy with a phaser cannon turn up unnanounced violates the Prime Directive?

Riker vs the boarding party? Why? Serves no purpose. And if Shinzon could get people on board the Enterprise, why not beam them onto the bridge? And why stop at one party? And why does the Enterprise detail one small security team to counter it?

Data dies - how badly done was that? He suddenly gets an idea to use the damaged Enterprise to suck himself into space, go to the other ship (which has to be pretty damn difficult), get in, find the bridge (without being destroyed by the Remens on board, natch) and then blow everything up, killing himself. wtf? It just came across to me as "I am Brent Spiner. I am fed up with playing Data. I'm co-writing the story. Let's kill the character."

It was a fun movie, but full of plot holes. The aforementioned Scorpion attack ships are a good case in point. Obviously the Remens didn't think to assault the Enterprise with them.

Oh, and the computer screen being destroyed!? So after all this time, that screen was redundant, being as the bridge is obviously on the edge of the ship? So that later in the film we are literally looking out of the Enterprise and across space at the enemy. Bleh.

Hmm. I'm amazed, looking back, that I still think it's worth 3/5.
