People rallied behind the kid because while they laughed at his antics, they felt sorry for him, and a collection was taken up- in the end almost $4500 was raised to be given to the kid in cash and an Ipod.
However, once the kid and his parents filed a lawsuit, all my sympathy for this kid was gone. This is just another ploy to litigate when you're upset, and try to make a few free bucks claiming emotional damage. Get over it. Life will hand you things far worse than this, and if you plan to litigate over the death of a pet, a failed marriage, etc- you really need to re-evaluate your life. Yes, it sounds heartless and cruel, but there is nothing lower than the "I'll sue!" mentality that is all-too prevalent in our society today.
So my response is: Hell yeah! Show this thing everywhere, all the time. Its hilarious! Long live Darth Girth!!! Even people who are non-gamers and non-sci-fi lovers I have shown it to find it incredibly humorous. If you can't have a sense of humor about yourself, what have you got?

I couldn't agree more. I also believe the kid is weak and would have needed counceling anyway. So IMO this helped him get the help quicker. I still laugh at and enjoy this video. He is a real asses ass for sueing over this.
ergeheilalt said:I think the lawsuit issue is just a reflection of our society. You take a risk putting anything on tape. Ultimately the kid is at fault. He could have either destroyed the tape (and pay his friend for the tape) or done the simple thing, and rewind and erase.
Bottom line: It was mean, but it was funny. I got laughed at when I had to preform a Hamlet skit and acted like a goof. Does that mean I sue my teacher for forcing me to play Claudius? I hope the lawsuit gets tossed out. If you can't laugh at yourself, then you deserve to be miserable.

My tape was kept by my english teacher and aired every year during hamlet unit for 2-3 class every year. I was embarrassed beyond belief when I first saw it (hell, not only did I act really poorly, but I also had to dub over all the voices due to the noise of the free way). The laughing lasted all year and made its way into my year book.
I'm not debating whether or not the act itself was bad, I've already said it was. What I'm saying, is that the Star Wars kid has no one else to blame but himself. He made the movie on someone else's tape and did not dispose of it properly. If the kids who posted it to kazaa stole it from him, yeah they would be at fault. Instead he gave them back the tape. He had the chance to record over it, hell, he could have just rewound the tape and hit the record button and recorded a wall.
It was a mean act, yet nothing that I would consider the kids criminally liable for.

Who saw you play Claudius? How long did the laughing last?
Consider that Wighair laughed at the kid a day or two ago. Now what if Wighair lived down the road from the kid? Would he point? Would he laugh? Would he say to his friends "Hey guys, the Star Wars kid lives in my street!"? Would his friends point and laugh? Would they tell their friends?
I think that at most, Your class and their parents saw you play Claudius, and their parents probably never made mention of how stupid you looked to your face. So, maybe about 30, 40 people saw you. And the laughing lasted, what? A week? Two?
This kid has been seen by thousands if not millions of people. This kid is laughed at and ridiculed in the street. This kid will have no chance of a normal life for some years to come.
It is my belief that if you put someone through that, then you deserve to be miserable. I'm hoping they get every penny they ask for.
Depends on how you would define "knowledge". It was mentioned in various news articles when he was first admitted to the mental institution, but I guess the news articles could have been lies or whatever.Vocenoctum said:
Er, how do any of us know that the kid was laughed at in the street?
It's been said often enough on this thread, but really, how do any of us know?
Justice is subjective. For instance, I believe that it is justice.Going after the other kids is pure revenge. They put something up that they thought would be funny, and it spiraled way out of their hands from there. They may or may not feel guilty about doing it, and what happened to the kid, we don't know. Ruining their lives, and their parents lives because of it is not Justice.
So if the lives of the kids and their families are ruined, it doesn't matter, because life isn't fair.I was picked on in school, I've picked on others before. Life Happens and it's Not Fair.
