I wonder how long the movies are? Matrix was 136 minutes, and IMAX movies can only be 120 minutes. This led to some rather interesting editing in Attack of the Clones.

If they cut out the Anakin/Padme scenes, it only improved the movie...

But why can IMAX only be 120 minutes?

The only Anakin/Padme scene cut out was the one where he talks about forcing people to do things the right way. You know, the main one that forshadows him becoming like Vader, there were plenty of others they could have cut with no trouble.

I have no idea why, but I asked at the theater and was told IMAX films can't be longer than 120 minutes.

The 120min limitation has to do with reel size. Anything larger and the IMAX projectors would break down. It seems that replacing all of the existing projectors with ones that coul handle it would be a rather costly enterprise.

IMAX movies aren't limited to 120. When I went to go see Gladiator on IMAX, nothing was cut out, and it is about 150 minutes long.

Technically, IMAX movies can go any length. Gladiator is a good example. However...Gladiator was shown in IMAX at 35mm, the same as in the regular movie theaters. The 70mm showings, like Apollo 13 and Attack of the Clones, are limited to 120 minutes.

The Matrix played at IMAX at Universal Studios (near Hollywood, CA) in 35mm for a while. It was awesome on a big screen, I can't wait for the new ones. :)
