i agree i was really disappointed that they showed Gandalf in it. i mean, i've read the books, but there are a lot of people who haven't. i remeber one of the times i saw it in the theatres, when he hell in Moira, the theatre was in dead silence, and you could hear this one woman gasp and whisper "no!" it was a great moment. his return in tTT will be diminshed now that it's already out. :(

Yeah, I was hoping that they wouldn't spoil it for neophytes too. I read the trilogy when I was nine so I can barely remember sharing the Three Walkers shock at finding Gandalf alive. It's been nearly 20 years since I huddled under the covers trying to finish that chapter by flashlight just so I could know who the stranger in white was for sure.

Hollywood just doesn't know how to make a good trailer anymore. I've seen so many trailers recently that give away major plot twists or even the ending itself. If Empire Strikes Back was being released for the first time this year, "Luke I am your father" would probably open the frigging trailer.

Oh

My

God

.

As for Gandalf showing up, those who never read the book will think he'll pull a ghost-type, guardian-angel, Obi-Wan routine, they won't expect him to be as much badass as we know he'll be.

Just a question: what does he say at the end of the trailer. "I came back to you (don't understand this part) the tide"?

"I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide"

I think they had to show Gandalf showing up.
Somehow, most people would have gotten a clue anyway, either by careless references or by the smug grin of those who read the book.
Either way, many people read the book after seeing the movie, so they'd know too.
Additionally, Ian McKellen probably has a billing contract, so they'd have to include him in the titles, and the promotion - so they can spell it out as well.
