Star Trek: Section 31

Movie is out on Paramount+ today.

Haven't seen a new thread (old one is about the trailer) so here's one.

I assume there will be spoilers, but I won't start with too much.

Will preface this by saying I have never been a big Section 31 fan, and even with Michelle Yeoh (Who I AM a fan of) this doesn't change my opinion of Section 31 at all.

Though really, saying this is a "Section 31" movie is itself kind of misleading, other than the name there's really nothing in this movie that screams covert Federation team doing covert Federation stuff. It's just a ragtag group trying to stop the bad guy (More Guardians of the Galaxy - if you sucked all the humor out).

Initial thoughts:

It was like a low rent Suicide Squad - the first not so good one - which should say something!

There are early surprise deaths - involving people you don't care about.

There are betrayals - by people you don't care about against people you don't really care about.

There's a "shocking" twist which isn't all that shocking and again involves someone you don't really care about.

And Rachel Garrett is a part of the team - because, why not?

IMO of course.

Thoughts?

Meh......not a fan of suicide squad, or any of the moral quagmire Shows to drag down the heroes.

Planning on watching it this weekend, but I assume they don't do anything to redeem her character?

Like, of all the Star Trek movies to make they make one about a mass murdering, sentient being eating, malevolent dictator who is working for the most morally grey entity possible with the Federation?

Thats section 31. A complete repudiation of all morality or ethics.

I mean, the Section 31 stuff in DS9 is interesting and poses good questions about the nature of the Federation, and what it is you would be willing to sacrifice to maintain it etc.

Yet, Kurtzman seems to be in love with the idea of cool-antihero Section 31 as they're all over his trek shows and don't serve any other purpose than being a Star Trek version of edgy 90s comic book characters.

I love Section 31...Until everybody knew about it. Thanks DISCO! Review sounds exactly as expected.

Funny how my Black Friday discounted sub to P+ runs out as this movie and Season Finale of The Agency drops.

There are no moral quagmires in the movie and none of the characters are heroes (well maybe Rachel Garrett, but only because of what we know about her outside this movie).

But yeah, likely not your cup of tea.

Does the fact that she looks REALLY SAD about some of the bad stuff she's done count?

No there's nothing really done to redeem her character, IMO.

Yeah, I mean she's literally from the Mirror Universe and from what we see has done stuff that makes even THOSE people cringe. IMO it's a truly terrible premise for a character.
