[OT] Was Spiderman always so whiney? 1980's cartoon

First Post
My 3.5 y.o. daughter loves watching spiderman, well we did the dvd and I fast forward through 75% of the movie for awhile until she open mouthed kissed me like spiderman and Jane (we have not brought it home since, it creeped me out) but now we bring home the dvd of the 1980's cartoon of spiderman--no blood etc...perfect.

She is happy but...

What is up with every episode Spidey is ready to quit or give up?
Mary Jane misses me,
I need more time at work,
The city hates me,
Maybe JJJ is right etc, etc.

I mean every episode is him getting ready to give up and then a friend/fan/fellow hero gets him seeing that it is the good fight and he should stay.

This guy has some serious issues, he needs to go to Doc Oc but for therapy, sheesh...anyone else notice this?

I'm not a superhero guru, but I always thought that was the jist of Spidey. That he wasn't larger than life, but he was given larger than life powers. I mean, what would most people do? They'd make a fortune in show buisness/professional lab rat/whatever and drop a quick $10k on therapy for the whole Uncle Ben thing. Parker didn't do that.

But I'm mostly playing devil's advocate here. This isn't a windmill I'm gonna charge for very long.

Which Spider-Man cartoon?

The first one, with the famous theme song (Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can / spins a web, any size, catches thieves, just like flies...), was from the late 70's.

There was an 80's Spider-Man cartoon, which evolved into Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends (Firestar and Iceman).

I bet you're talking about the 90's version, which lasted longer than any other version (5 seasons!). It was pretty good, but the later episodes were kind of dumb. I guess he was whinier in this version than others, but the others didn't exactly have a lot of characterization in the first place. So, this one was a lot truer to the comics, in that sense.

Then there was Spider-Man Unlimited, which lasted one season, and it was Marvel's answer to Batman Beyond. They dumped Spidey in a parallel universe, gave him a different costume, had a totally different supporting cast. This one didn't last.

And this summer, we'll see the new Spider-Man cartoon debut on MTV, of all stations. Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser) does his voice, and Lisa Loeb is Mary Jane.

I always knew the Green Goblin was whimpy, but now he's fighting a 3.5 year old?

It was from the late 60s; 1967, actually. I know, because I watched it as a little kid (I'm 37 now), and that was the very early 70s and it was in reruns.
