[OT] What is the best selling beer in your country?

Funny you should say that, an Australian company (based in Adelaide if memory serves correct) created a beer named Duff and promptly got sued.

I remember this one. The owner's family name was Duff but it didn't help.

There was another Aussie entrepreneur who sold bathing-suits under the name Absolute. In Swedish it's spelled without the e in the end. In order to protect absolute with an e in Australia and USA the government owned Absolut Vodka sued this poor lady in Australia and USA. (Apparantly she had sold one bathing-suit to the US by mail order). Naturally she lost in both courts and her business was killed. The end result was that no one in USA or Australia can have absolute in it's brand name whereas only absolut (without the e) had been barred before.

As one of the few Dutchman here:

The most popular beer in the Netherlands is probably Heineken

My favourite beer from holland is Grolsch (ever heard of that?)

My all time favourite is..... Budweiser!! Damn that's just a mighty good piece of craftmanship that beer is....too bad it's kinda expensive here in Holland.

Send me all your Tuborg and I'll send you all my Budweiser.

Because I love beer!!!!

I'm not going to comment on the best selling beer in the US, mostly because it sucks. There are too many domestics I like to mention them all, but for this southern boy, traveling out west last Christmas was a joy. Just for getting beer I just can't get in Chattaboogie. I still haven't had Red Hook's stout yet
(my brother has and he likes it). My favorite import is Singha, a nice little beer from Thailand. And anything my brother deceides to brew up. I love homebrewing!!!!:D

Oh and if you are looking for some good beers from countries that aren't known for their breweries, Tsing Tao is a nice chinese beer and Kingfisher from India is very refreshing. Actually, Kingfisher is one of my favorite pale ales.

Redhook recently discontinued bottle distribution of my current favorite, Redhook Hefe-Weizen. I can still get it in kegs (the larger 1/2 barrel size only), but that’s a bit more of an investment in consumption than I am willing to make, at this time.

That makes five of my favorite beers in a row, that have been discontinued since 1995; Redhook Hefe-Weizen, Michelob Pale Ale, Redhook Rye, American Originals Muenchener, and Elk Mountain Red. You may notice a pattern, there; three were brewed by Anheuser-Busch and the remaining two were brewed by a partner of Anheuser-Busch, as A-B has shares in Redhook, Widmer, Kirin, and Modelo (Corona). Yes, I am part owner of a beer distributorship.

I think I’ll switch over to Kirin Ichiban, for the time being. Though the Kirin distributed in the US is brewed in California, it technically counts as an import as a Kirin brewmaster controls all production and uses Kirin's own special yeast.

Best Selling Beer in the US: Bud Wies Er

Favorite domestic: Red Hook ESB when in US.
When in Germany: There's this little town... and we think the beer was called Alderbrau. (old beer?) Anyways, best damned beer I ever tasted.

Favorite Import: Leffe Blonde (recipe is from the 1290s or somthing like that...) wonderful Belgian.

HEY DD! Is it that hard to get Belgians in Germany? Someone needs to tell them to stop hoarding it for themselves.

Aaron.

Alderbrau? Found this link, it contains the recipe pack details, there's also Alderbrau Oktoberfest...It seems to be a bavarian beer.

Unfortunately, it is that hard to get belgian beers, even in western Germany. You have to live near the border to get easier. Leffe is a very good one, as is Duvel and Chimay (rouge is the best). Have to buy some packs when I'm in Belgium.

I really like Sol Brew from the Solomon Islands, it's a fresh lager. But you have to drink it quick, because of the tropical climate ;) . Keo from Cyprus is also good.

I don't think it's a shame that Bud Light is the bestselling US beer, followed by Budweiser: there's nothing objectively wrong with those beers. Taste is subjective.

Let's say that hamburgers are the most popular food in America (don't know if they are, but let's pretend). Is there something inherently good about that because you happen to like hamburgers, too? Something bad about it because you prefer pizza? Our favorite soft drink is Coke. Is that because it's somehow objectively better than all other soft drinks?

I do think it's a shame that more Americans don't try beers that have flavors different from the very light flavors we seem to favor, but I don't think that means we have bad taste, just different taste. Personally I much prefer beers with more flavor and body (love Guiness Draught), but I don't use my preference to look down my nose at Bud drinkers, just like I don't use my preference for Dr. Pepper to look down my nose at Coke drinkers.

(I use other subjective criteria!) :)

Mmmmm. Beer.

Having moved from Seattle in its heyday of microbrewing fun, to San Diego, which is now experiencing a microbrewing upsurge, I can tell you about some tasty beers.

Down here is SoCal (as the locals so love to call Southern California), there are some very solid brands/breweries. Just about anything by Stone Breweries is great, especially their Ruination Pale Ale (unbelievable score on the bitterness charts) and their flagship Arrogant Bastard ale. Alesmith, another local brewer, puts out a 12% alcohol brew called Speedway Stout. The "speed" part comes from the coffee beans... yummy yikes!

I feel bad for any Germans that can't get ahold of good Belgian brews. I road tripped an hour or so to a store in the LA area that has 30-40 different Belgian brews (among hundreds of other varieties). Not my cup of tea, but I couldn't pass up grabbing a couple of those pottery/porcelain bottles. If there were any justice in the world, you should be able to get them much more easily a few thousand miles close to Belgium...

*gets distracted and goes to crack open a cold one*
