[OT] What is the most "wasted" money spent on a gaming item.

Would have to be 3.0 Diablo: To Hell and Back (?). Was just getting back into D&D, loved Diablo, picked it up at the same time as my 3.0 books. Read through it once, realized how crappy CRPGs are when translated to PnP, never been opened again.

is that the Undermountain stuff or the Labyrinth of Madness or Night Below boxed set or ....?

None of the above...well, actually it IS above, just not in your list. It was the Myth Drannor green box that I couldn't remember the name of.

The $25 I spent in 1980 for the long-awaited DMG. What a load of crap. Wish I had known that that the DM screen was coming out, since the attack tables were the only useful thing in the whole book.

I don't know if it was a waste or not because I liked reading them but I bought everything they printed for Mekton Z and then found out I was the only one in the group who even had the slightest interest. Not just one book but all the books, nobody even batted a eye they just said no. I've even got the gamemaster's screen, never been used, heck I've been trying for over 6 years to get somebody to at least try it, they don't even say no anymore they just change the subject.

Dragonlords of Melnibone, $23.95.

Very bad adaptation of the D&D/D20 rules for a literary setting.

I think the writers might have glanced once at some of the core rule books.

If you're disappointed about it, you should try selling that one. My understanding is that the number made available is so far below the demand that people will pay collectible prices for it. Maybe some research on E-bay would be worth your while to see how much you can get out of it. Personally have 2 copies in my library - never been used, not for sale.

Oh I like it enough and it will stay in my collection probably until my kids sell it
Just wish there was enough interest in it by my players to have gotten in some gaming out of it.

Well, I wouldn't count anything I found entertaining or useful for reference material somewhere down the road. If I ignore the hundreds of unused and unpainted warhammer minis, that cuts the list down to:

Cyborg Commando
Living Steel
The Indiana Jones Game (all railroad all the time)

and the winner:

Gammarauders!

Even though I knew I would likely never play a White Wolf game again, I have bought every single Limited Edition Faux Leather book they have sold (Vampire main, vampire storytellers guide, guid to sabbat, guide to camarilla, Werewolf, Mage, Exalted, etc.). At a minimum of 50 dollars a pop, that is a lot of wasted money. I love the books, they sit very nicely on my shelf, and I have no regrets, but that was a month or two of groceries.

Magic The Gathering cards.

I still love the game. I was introduced to the game in college by a roommate. I bought a few boxes, spent over $200, moved out and have never found anyone else that plays or is interested in learning. My wife tried it out, but it isn't her favorite game. That was a lot of money for a game I played for only 4 months.

Oh yes, I had that one. Our group read it, blinked audibly, and put it down, never to pick it up again. A friend summed it up best as "All the characters try really, really hard, and in the end, Indy wins."
