[OT] What is the most "wasted" money spent on a gaming item.

Hero Builder's Guidebook.... Stronghold Builder's Guidebook... Enemies & Allies... Farscape d20... Kingdoms of Kalamar Player's Guide... First Edition of Star Wars d20... the Psionics Handbook... Jade & Steel... The list goes on and on....

My biggest regret is buying the Dragon Magazine Archive, and subsequently selling all my dragon mags below #250... which was all of them for #75 up... oh well, hindsight... 20/20... and all that jazz. :o

I kinda miss my Rifts collection too... even though I never played it... *sigh*

3.0 Dieties and Demigods. It's really more of a DM's reference tool, and I don't DM. So why did I buy it? Probably because it looked pretty.

I don't consider anything a waste of money spent unless it's something I never use (will never use) and didn't get any value out of at all. So, I might not use d20 Traveller any time in the near future, but I won't necessarily call it a waste if I got interesting ideas out of it for other games and enjoyed it for other reasons.

So, that said, gaming things I HAVE wasted money on:

Several Complete XX Handbooks for 2nd edition (Elves comes particularly to mind).
Traveller New Era (a GROSS misuse of the Traveller name in my opinion)
The Ravenloft Monstrous Compendium volume 2 pack
Rune
Fudge

People have also wasted money on me as gifts that I just don't appreciate including:

Iron Dragon
GameBoy Advance

Of the things I've seen other people comment on that I don't consider a waste of my money:

Star Wars d20 (I like the game, has some great ideas)
Encyclopedia Magica (I still use it for 3E for treasure ideas)

*This is not a slamming thread, more of a "I can't believe I bought that" kinda thread.

I will start, I bought a d20 meteorite die at GenCon last year for $100, have I used it--nope, have I almost lost it--yup. Do I regret it, nope but it was a waste.
More importantly if they have a new limited die will I get a match for this year, sucker that I am, I am sure the answer is yes.

OK, your turn.

They will have something similar to that this year at GENCON. According to Crystal Cast's ad in Dragon 309, they'll have dice made of dinosaur fossil this year.

As for my biggest waste, I think it'd also have to be the set of hematite dice I bought (I think it was for $25), not that they aren't cool, but the first time I rolled them, teh top of my d4 chipped...

Wastes of money:

Al-Qadim (bought a ton of stuff, still have it, never opened it--still shrinkwrapped.)

Tons of random modules and game books from a FLGS's 75% off "going out of business" sale.

Many, many, many unpainted mins that'll never see a drop of primer, much less paint.

-z, resolved to never buy another unpainted min.

Scarred Lands.

I went to my FLGS and said:" I'm tired of the Realms, and I want a good cool setting."

He goes:"Get scarred lands. It's awesome. GREAT setting."

And I go:"OK.:

So I buy Ghelspad AND Creature Collection 1 AND Creature Collection 2 AND the gazeteer.

*sigh*

Not that it's bad and everything, but I HATE it. NOT my mood. NOT my shtick. IMO.

I'm might use the gazeteer and grow my own setting in it. Now I gotta get rid of Ghelspad, CC1, and CC2. Anyone interested (mint) ?

Biggest waste of money? That's easy:

E-Tools

Overpriced, and so buggy it cost more time checking the results than doing it by hand when it worked at all.

Other than that, let's see:

Planescape boxed set: Never played it, didn't really like it. The contents are real pretty, though.

Alternity: I own all the rulebook supplements, and a couple Star*Drive books, plus the DarkMatter line. DarkMatter is cool, the rest, not so much.

Agone: A French RPG translated to English. I just had no idea where to start with this one, and no one who was interested in trying. The poor writing (probably due to the translation) didn't help matters. Publisher has since exitted the US market.

X-Crawl GM's screen: The screen sucks, contains almost no tables that you'd actually use during play, and the crawl included is poor and rife with typos.

There's a ton more stuff that could probably be considered a waste, but I enjoy reading them, so they're worth it to me even if I don't use it in game.

The 'Dune' book at the 2000 Gen Con.
I like Dune but no one will ever play it. But it is a nice item to have in my collection.

A book that I really wish I could go back and buy. It is a collectors item now. I just really like the Dune story.

My local hobby store had a damaged copy they were selling for 50$...

oh well,
Ysgarran.
