[OT] What is the most "wasted" money spent on a gaming item.

A series of 5 books from Fast Forward Entertainment has probably been my biggest waste of money. Not because they are the most useless things on the market -- they're not -- but because I bought Swords of Power, didn't really care forit, then bought Rings of Power anyway.

Disappointed for the second time, I nevertheless picked up Demons & Devils, hoping I'd like it better than I did their "magic item catalogues."

Nope. But that didn't keep me from buying both Cloud Warriors and their angels book, just because there are so few products that cover such things.

So, I managed to waste over $100 (even with the discount I get at my FLGS) over the course of several months, buying products I had no real expectation of enjoying. Not one of these books has ever been used, and they're all for sale on the Marketplace forum now.

So many many things in the RPG world and mostly becasue I do not have time. WoT RPG, it is great, but no players, Forgotton Realms 3E, good info, but I don't like Forgotton Realms, Kalamar Atlas, it is beautiful, but again it does not get too much use. How about the 100's of dollars spent on mini's when it takes me 20+ hours to paint just 1. I could go on and on and on. So much stuff, so little time :(

Mine isn't about dollar cost ... its about how useful it was ... while I may NEVER use the Epic Level Handbook or Psionics Handbook but I don't count them as complete wastes of cash and time ...

the Psi Handbook showed me how you can take a thing ... like the sorcerer and make an entire new system from it ... making whole new feats and abilities that are JUST LIKE SOMETHING ELSE and then all you have to do is fill in some holes and voila ... agh Yeah Mr Geezerjoe, we know you were looking for something new and we're giving it to you ... see this? NO, its not a wand ... its a Dorje. They are completely different! See this cool thing ... no its not a wand ... its a tattoo that allows you to use an ability ONCE and then it's gone ... yeah I know it SOUNDS like a scroll ... but this isn't no paper .. its on your SKIN. Psha.

... plus I expected that the Epic Level Handbook to allow some really incredible gaming ... I've got some issues with it too ... (seems like instead of allowing the game to scale up exponentially or give ideas on playing in different dimensions or planes, it caps the power curve to be subdued somewhat and doesn't really add that much new functionality ... in that vein I think FFG did a slightly better job with their Legendary Classes idea)

I learned some things from both books so they aren't complete wastes of cash (close to $70 worth) ... nope ... the worst was something that I purchased for close to $10 ... I can't remember the name but it was some sort of "This is how you play this character class" book ugh ... about the only thing I can think of is giving this as a gift to someone with NO imagination ... ugnh

well, according to this thread, anything bought from New Wave would qualify. :p
No, I think we're talking about products you actually held in your hands. If it gets shipped (even a year later), that doesn't count. :p

For me, it would be Star Wars d20. I bought because a friend wanted me to run some "Living Force" games with it. Nice idea, since I don't play LF and could 'eat' the modules. So, I spend $35 for the core book and $15 for the LF guidebook, but then I never end up running any mods at all.

For me that would be when I bought a d100. Tried to use it a few times but it was just too hard to read.

Most recently, I would say the Hero Building book. That one was pretty bad.

Probably Call of Cthulhu d20. Honestly, I have never used the book, not even read a single page from it. I bought it a year ago - found it yesterday under a pile of old motherboards and other gear. :)
