He was never part of the band. He is just a guest guitarist and friend of the band.

Ok, I really have to chime in here. I greatly dislike musical arguments because it is impossible to define what is "good" and what is "bad" in relation to opinion. Better to argue the merits of the color "green" than discuss whether DMB is sucky or not.

What, by the way, does skill have to do with popular music? I mean, there are many different skills that can make a band appealing to listen to. Skill at songwriting, instrument playing, singing...whatever.

I refuse to believe that complex=good when it comes to music. Its taste, people. That's like saying that you only read books that use big, difficult words.

I've only got one song of thiers, "Corporal Jigsaw Quandary", and it's great. The intro drum beat is killer.

That is what I said. What you think is good music is subjective. However, a person's ability to play notes, scales, chords and arpeggios, etc can be measured and is a skill.

...to realize that Chuck Schuldiner makes most metal & rock guitarists sound like cheap hacks and that R. Christy's drumming is totally insane and technical out the wazoo?


You probably didn't like the vocals?

canis, I'm just curious, what drummers are you impressed by, I'd like to listen to them.

As herald pointed out, the skill to evoke a positive response is pretty subjective , but here's my opinion:

Ginger Baker is my personal favorite. Rock-jazz drummer. His best known stuff was with Cream, but he did great stuff with Graham Bond and a bunch of other bands.

Artimus Pyle's also really good. Mainly known from Skynyrd and Charlie Daniels' Volunteer Jam.

For some great jazz drums, you need to get a hold of Max Roach and Baby Dodds. Max Roach especially, IMO. That man was FAST, and he helped launch whole new genres of jazz (I think he's still alive, actually, but I've only heard his older work). I've also been referred to Alton Red for Jazz drums, but I haven't heard much of him yet.

I'm also in favor of Charlie Watts from the Stones and Alex Van Halen, for entirely different reasons.

Also, I recently stumbled on a guy named Steve Gadd, who's apparently done a bunch of stuff with Clapton and Paul Simon.

As for the guitarist question, I didn't know they had more than one guitarist, and, honestly, I don't think I'd notice if Clapton was playing with them. I've developed a survival skill whereby I can instantly change the radio station when bands that irk me come on. It saves me from aneurisms, as I take music pretty seriously.
