Last D&D character I played was a very fun half-orc ranger.

I'm intrigued by the paladin, but ti would take a different kind of DM than I've had in a while for that.

that's an odd statement as best is not a difficult words to define. Of course it is opinion based so people will have different bests.

And I wouldn't have the barbarian go calling the druid a sissy when he even his pet can eat the barbarian, or the bard can suggest that he take a long walk off a short pier, and so on...

My vote goes to the paladin, without whom Cha would be a dump stat and we'd have far less alignment debates.

Take it any way you want to. It can be best to place, best over all, best. Best is all up to you.

Then I'll go with the bard, because I'm having a lot of fun playing one. I like the flavour of the class. When I have time I make up some of the lyrics to his songs.
