I don't think a lot of us malcontents are malcontent because of the nature of the spells. True, there are some spells whose very nature and mechanical workings irk me, but that's not the point of this thread, IMO.
The point of this thread is a point of usage -- frequency. Magi have potentially unlimited power, but I think a lot of people missed the idea of "With great power comes great responsibility." Just because a mage can fly up into the sky and rain down fiery-ball-blasting death doesn't mean he should, or even would, but the D&D magic system doesn't have a way to limit this without a mage who judiciously uses his magic.
I really like the idea Saeviomagy put forth, in making spells detectable by magic-users the world over, save certain spells with special usages; I think this would make mages think twice about using their awesome powers. They could still do so, but at the risk of generating hunters.
