Overdue realisations: Are you a dummy?

I've always thought of the F4 as the 4 elements too...

Earth - The Thing (rocky, etc)
Fire - The Human Torch (flaming - no joke on sexuality intended)
Air - Invisible Woman (whispy, invisible, etc)
Water - Mr. Fantastic (how is water inside a balloon? the water isn't stretching but it makes a flexible container stretchier...)

that's always how i've thought of it anyway. I know the last one is a bit of a stretch (again, no pun intended) but it fits. :)

I can only really think of two:
1. remember Alien Nation, the show? See the title, "Alien Nation", think about a heavy factor of the story, the alienation of the visitors. It was many years after the show when, just sitting and thinking, the name of the show clicked in my head. I believe I cursed outloud for not getting that years earlier.

2. Keifer Sutherland is Donald Sutherland's kid. It was only a couple of years ago when i was watching something with Donald Sutherland and I said outloud, thinking, "I wonder if he's related to Kiefer?" My SO looked at me like I was a moron, and said, "Well, yeah. . . he's his father."

I know there are some other moments, but I can't think of them, what with it being 6 in the morning, and several hours past my bedtime. . . :)

I didn't get why aliens that are completely destroyed by water would come to Earth (Alien Nation, Signs).

Oh wait, I still don't get that. :p

As for Ra's al Ghul, in the animated Batman (the cool '90s one, not the sucky new one) they pronounced it Raysh al Gool, but I noticed that's not quite how it was pronounced in Batman Begins.

I noticed that as well so I looked it up. Apparently, the artist who created the villain always pronounced it "Ra's al Ghul." That was the official pronunciation until Batman:TAS. In that series, as you said, they pronounced it "Raysh al Ghul." DC changed that to the official way to pronounce his name.

In the movie, the writers decided to pay homage to Batman's roots by pronouncing it in its original form. :)

I likewise only realized the four elements = the fantastic four connection a year or two ago. I likewise felt stupid once I'd realized it. I keep getting epiphanies like this every once in a while and I can't decide if I should be happy for realizing something or embarassed for not having realized it earlier. :o

Several years ago I was recalling a conversation I'd had with this girl in high-school and I suddenly had this ephiphany in which I finally clued into a subtle innuendo she'd slipped into the conversation to let me know she was interested in me. Only a decade or two too late. *sigh* :\

Along those latter lines, I had a similar epiphany a few months ago. Was looking through an old yearbook and saw an inscription from a girl that I really liked but was too shy to ask out (and didn't think she liked me). The inscription, which included her phone number and a heart (!), couldn't have been more blatant. "It's been awesome getting to know you this year, I really hope to see you this summer, here's my phone number, call me!"

More than two decades later I read it again. God what a moron! Carrie, you were so beautiful!

Marvel's 1602 series makes the FF/elemental parallel very explicit. Great series to boot.

As for other revelations I was a bit late on... I didn't get the end of 2001 the first time I saw it. Or the second time, for that matter... Oh wait, I still don't get it. I get the book, but the end of the movie... yesh.

For the longest time I just didn't get William Shatner. He seemed so smug, so full of himself, yet without much discernable talent.

Then I saw Free Enterprise. And everything changed. Now I dig him.

Fast Learner watch Boston Legal its some of Shatner's best work. Anyway my dummy moment is that it took me about six years to realize that Gwen Stacy was Spider-man's first girlfriend.
