I wanted to say a quick thank you to Paizo for all their great work on reimagining some classic D&D monsters. This is the first time in a long while that I have truly been enthused by monsters.

Part of what does it for me is that the monsters have such personality. Goblins have all sorts of quirks. Kobolds look damn cool. Ogres are kinda creepy. Certainly, I think the goblins and kobolds will be in most of my D&D games from now on, and ogres may depend on the setting.

So thank you to Paizo for making monsters fun again. Keep up the great work!

Kobolds + lycanthrope template = lots of frustration.

Also, I like to use what I call "trollbolds" on older players. Essentially, they're just kobolds with the troll's regeneration ability. How annoying is it when the PC's kill the same kobolds, over and over, and don't realize it until much later...

In the last session for my Wastes campaign, the I had the players roll fort saves. Those that failed started to vomit a lot. Then after they'd expelled about a gallon or two of the black/orange substance, the puddles attacked. I used ochre jelly stats, but didn't allude at all to what they were aside from oozes. One of the players said that was one of the most memorable fights they've ever had.

Yoink.

If you like Paizo's re-casting of classic monsters, keep your eye out for this upcoming product.

Wow. I cannot wait for that to come out.

@Twowolves. Ooh. "Them." Nice one. Very, very nice.

@Roguerouge. Ok, that is awesome. Trap one is definitely going to seal them in.

Try this: Insect-lycanthrope. And if you're going to use it, go with something a little more exotic - a Centipede. Centipedes are evil, and not as overplayed as spiders or scorpions.

I suggest bookmarking that - took me FOREVER to find it.

Going back to the original legendary versions, kobolds have been deep cavern fae, haunting mines and other underground locations. I think it shouldn't be too difficult to emphasize those aspects of the kobold to make them more terrifying opponents.

Of course, the key to using kobolds in this manner is to keep the players from actually seeing the kobolds as much as possible. Instead, put the emphasis on their traps and ambushes.

I was actually thinking along the lines of something alien has called the children and then warped them without their consent. Kinda takes the fun out of Great Cleave when the targets are 5 year olds (who just might be curable).

Sick, yes yes, I know.
