D&D General Palace of the Silver Princess orange cover stating bid $1 now $4000.

The decapus (suggestive monster name alert!) lovingly fondling a victim is… well, it’s something.
Do you mean the cover art? I wouldn't call that "lovingly fondling."

If you're thinking of the "Illusion of the Decapus" illustration, it's pretty tame (though it was the cause of some hand-wringing at the time), and also, you don't actually see the decapus in it.

Collectors gonna collect.
With the increasing number of celebrity gamers and exposure of D&D and growth, the prices sure have gone up on the rare items. I'm still kicking myself for listing my 5th printing white box on ebay about 15 years ago. It went for $100. now they are more than $1000.

I downloaded it, and recalling lore of controversy about illustrations, I decided to see what the fuss was.

Is “Dream of the Decapus” and the 3-headed creatures what it’s about?

The success of 5e sure has pushed up the prices of some of the rarer things. I plugged a few gaps in my collection (specifically the R1-4 and RPGA1-4 1e sets of adventures) just before the 5e boom hit, and there's simply no way I could afford to do that today.

Making bizarre caricatures of one's co-workers and bosses rarely wins favor.

It's honestly not clear who is responsible for that part, though, the author may have been done in by an artist on a Sanarky day ticking off Kevin Bloom.
While this is true it is also awesome. We have all wanted to stick it to a bad boss or bad co-workers. I kind of love it.
