D&D 5E Paladin just committed murder - what should happen next?

Overwhelming - no significant chance to win the battle. Pal-7 vs adult blue dragon I'd count as 'overwhelming', and probably about the same as what our level 1 PCs faced. Captain America (sans Mjolnir) vs Thanos would be a similar overwhelming threat.

Edit: Maybe you misunderstood me. We didn't fight the bandits; if we had done we would have died, as far as I could see.
No I understood you. You basically use overwhelming as we cannot expect beat it in one way... but we can actually beat it if we use other ways.

Compared to the paladin vs adult dragon, the combat option seems off the table.

However, the social attack is one that had already been tried and took them on a strong result from (it seems) everyone dies to half die.

That seems to place nobody dies at a significantly higher difficukty.

Unless you got thru that social attack option by rolling like many 20s in a row, going for the way outside odds, then it wasnt those kind of odds.

Like I said, you seem to be operating under a different definition of overwhelming.

The OP has clearly indicated that the situation was a lot like the one I described.

Honestly, yeah, @Oofta has the right of it. I let this bug me far more than I should have. It's a toss up, which has been the weirder conversation - should north be to the top of a map or this one. :D

You folks have fun.

If the Dragon wasn't already a major plot point for the PC and the Party, he/she just became one. Especially if the Paladin Oath is one of Vengeance. But I'd say a Geas could be placed upon the Paladin to work towards stopping the Dragon, and aiding any victims of it's travels. Depending on whom the Paladin worships.
