Paragon Path names revealed by Jonathan Tweet!

Makes you long for the days of Dragon Tail Cut...
Good luck to Necromancer Games getting a 1st Ed. feel with THIS material.

Hah, 1st Ed., where you got a new title EVERY level!
"Hi, I'm Frank the Veteran"
After a day or two of adventure...
"Call me Frank the Swordsman today"
Another week passes...
"I'm not a Swordsman anymore, now I'm Frank the Hero!"

I guess the names were better...but the application is not to be missed.

Here's what I'm thinking would be the best way they can do this:

Paragon Paths and Epic Destinies won't have an automatic effect, but instead open up a specialized set of abilities. So perhaps a Spellstorm Mage is can learn magics related to the weather, and specialize in attacking with lightning, thunder and cold.

This would be similar to the class training feats, that don't (as far as we can tell) provide the features of another class but do open up it's powers. This would have the advantage that going without a path or destiny still leaves you with the classes normal high level abilities and doesn't reduce the characters overall power.

Or, what I think is more likely, they can have a set of powers and also give a benefit such as the build options provide, but a little stronger. In this case, going without one effectively means shooting yourself in the foot.

Of course, if getting one came at the cost of a feat that might just work out fine. Class training could also have some bonus or other benefits besides abilities, as far as we know.

The paragon paths really exposes how bad a name Warlord is for a newb 1st Level character. In every game, book or newspaper I've ever read a warlord is top of his profession not entry level. The Battle Captain thusly would work under him. Even the martial term battle is subserviant to war. The designers have the right intentions but this one rankles me while the others are just okay. At this rate, I can only humorously speculate a further demotion in the epic path like: Assault Seargant or Corporal Crusader?

Hmm....I don't love them either. I could see some of the names growing on me, spellstorm, iron vanguard and astral weapon are no worse then names I've already gotten used to in 3e. But battle captain and battle archer.......yuck. What is the point of putting battle in front of their names? Is it to differentiate from pacifist captains and archers?

This is honestly the first thing that has somewhat dampened my enthusiasm.

That said, I agree that the names aren't a great deal worse than the PrCs we saw in 3e.

spellstorm mage ++++

battle archer ++
battle captain ++
astral weapon +

Then again, I'm in the minority of really liking 4e naming conventions.

I don't really have a problem with the names. I think the goal is really to name the classes/paths/destinies somewhat generically, they can always be changed in your campaign. It's not like you go around in-character talking about what paragon path you have. That's kind of silly.

Spelstorm mage > maybe something similar to Spellfire weilder or something to do with the spell plague

Iron vanguard > Possibly DR related

Battle Archer > I got a whole lot of nothing maybe a combo of order of the bow and deepwood sniper

Battle Captain > I'm thinking Warlord but affecting multiple targets at once

Astral Weapon > Kensai radiance infused weapon

Just some ideas tossing them out there

Speculation- this is what defines the tiers.

At level 1, you get abilities based on your class. From that point on, you don't. You get powers instead, from your class' power list, and according to a (nearly) universal progression. At level 20, many of your powers automatically upgrade (see Thief examples). At level 10, you get a new shot of class abilities based on your Paragon Path.

The Wizard spells we've seen level 10 to 16 seem to have gaps in them at some levels, leading to speculation that those gaps are filled with powers from Paragon Paths. However, by the existense of level 16 Wizard powers, we can say with confidence that you will still get some powers from your class at level 16.

Edit: I think I totally misunderstood Cadfan's post. :(

Nevermind.
