Thanks for all the help, everyone. I will also be contacting WotC directly. I really don't want to "tattle" on the store, but this kind of crap is unacceptable and drives people away from the hobby.

[Update]
The "dndgameday@wizards.com" address bounced back as undeliverable. Any other ideas?

I saw that Black Diamond Games had it on their calander, but all it said was, 'more info to come' and obviously more info didn't.

Sorry about that. Information on this event was hard to get as a store owner and the commitment to running it was higher than normal, because of the unusual format, meaning we had to get buy-in from or RPGA volunteers to run it. It eventually went off and the group enjoyed it, but the calendar description never got beyond the "place holder" stage.

It was in our email mailing to those on our mailing list though. You might want to sign up. You can view the archive with the event information here.

The event was free of course. There was no charge to stores for the game day materials. I have to admit I prefer fewer "worldwide" events with more preparation and better support.

Well, for whatever reason, NO ONE showed up for game day today at my LGS, except me and my son. Drove an hour for nothing. Curious since we usually have 30+ people show up in the past, and the store had been advertising it for about 2 months.
Our store had a very good turnout with 2 full tables (usually we end up with about a table). I was there briefly because I have the "thing" that is going around and didn't want to expose anyone. I wouldn't have shown up at all, except I was the organizer and wanted to be sure things were running smoothly before I left.

I will note that this is the second time in a row that WotC set up a WWDDGD event during a holiday. Last time was Memorial Day weekend. This time it was Rosh Hashanah. In most areas it probably has a negligible effect, but in some areas it will severely hurt attendance.

Yea, my FLGS didn't charge. Yes the materials, as far as I know, were free to the stores.

This goes up with the stores that 'participate' then don't actually run events, but then sell the material. I'm not sure which is worse.

We did have a good turnout but it was less than last time. I think it would have been a good idea to include something pre done and advertise that fact. I loved the idea but I completely understand that some players may not agree or not understand that it wasn't difficult and was kinda fun.

We had a slot where we only had enough for one table. Fortunately I had prepared an adventure and ran it for them.

Much like mudbunny, above, I'm going to make sure people at WotC (including the RPGA Content Manager) hear about this in full.

While its' generally up to a store to decide if they charge for RPGA events (like LFR games) - such fees should be reasonable and clearly stated as being implemented by the store.

To take a free PROMOTIONAL event, and then claim that it's WotC making the participants buy $20 of product is both deceptive and cowardly.
