What I like about the Priory is that for the period and location it would be a significant motivator. it brings with it allies (the Priory and pagan religions- particularly femal divinity based ones) and enemies (the Church in general, the Inquisition), and issues with the order making the reason the covenant is watched (why is the covenant in contact with so many non-order people, why does the church seem to be taking an interest in the region, even beyond the normal heretic and witch hunts etc)
It is quite easy to translate this into a spring covenant also. What binds this group of magi together? Their membership of the Priory of Sion. No senior members of the Priory are present (at least to your knowledge), but occasional requests for aid, information and warnings come through (including people travelling/packages to be passed on, people to be hidden etc).
This is just anidea- but I like the idea of a historical secret society due to the abundance of information on it and being able to tie it in to the history of the region relatively easily.
