I think it all comes down to gamer maturity levels and that of the party/GM you are gaming with.

I play mostly males because I am just that and so it's easier for roleplaying purposes. But I also create female characters from time to time to give myself a challenge. Rp'ing as a convincing female role, is very hard to do well. And I'm not that good - but it's fun to try.
Actually, as a male, I sometimes find that my female characters come off as more convincing and realistic than the males. I don't know what that says about me. My best guess is that I need to be able to find ways to distance the character from myself before she can truly come to life, and gender swap does this for me (I'm guessing playing a really weird race might do it too, but as a GM, I rarely get to play at all, so I've never done that)

This again . . . have I missed an earlier thread/poll on the same topic?

No, you have not missed an earlier thread, you have missed several earlier threads.

And I gather from comments that I missed at least one of them, or at least the later stages of at least one of them...

I DESIGN about 55%Male/30%Female/15%Other. (Play enough sci-fi RPGs, you'll play some other...) Due to campaign restraints (usually DM's balking) I PLAY about 65%Male/25%Female/10%Other.

It all depends on the PC concept- it doesn't make as much sense to play a male mage whose abilities wax and wane with the cycle of the moon (ahem) as one who is female, for example. Likewise, a PC whose secret ID is that of the top wrestler in the WWE...kinda sorta has to be male.

Yes, unless you yourself are sexless.

That said, if you're a man who plays macho warforged, macho dromites, and a mindflayer known as Jim "You know what big tentacles mean, don't you," the Manly Man Thing From Beyond, then no, I'd say that for the purposes of this poll you'd say that most or all of your PCs are of your same gender.

wut if ur playing a changeling that acts more male or female depending on who ur pretending to be and every so often u role dice to see wut type of race and gender u r?

80% male/ 20% female.

I don't mind playing female, it's a character concept thing. Playing a prissy sorceress would be impossible, but I play a mean female drow cleric of Lolth.

Gamer maturity levels and that of the party/GM have nothing to do with it, and I don't understand anyone having a character concept requiring the character to be specifically male or female. Oh well.

I tend to play characters of the same sex as me (male). I have played a few female characters, however. It all depends on the concept I have going in.

Kane

i tend to play the characters i'd like to be if i lived in some fantasy world. so it's exclusively male. the npcs i design are 50/50 though. it's hardly a fantasy world witout a good percentage of females. there are many more archetypes then joan of arc...

All the character I have played have been the same gender as I. I would consider playing one of the opposite gender in a PBeM format - in a pen and paper game I think I would have a harder time playing the opposite gender.
